When people ask you who you are or tell you to walk them through your resumé, what they are really asking is "Please, tell me a (GOOD!) story!"
This video kicks off a series that will bring you some tips on how to master the art of storytelling every time.

Today I'm going to talk about what not to do when all people expect is a good
story.
I usually prefer to talk about what not to do because I don't think the flip
side works for everyone the same way.
What to do depends on several factors that should be addressed the same way a
nutritionist addresses someone's diet. However,
what not to do usually serve us very well.
The same way as saying that eating sugar is bad for your health.
So do not eat sugar. And to illustrate what we're going to talk about today,
I'm bringing you two questions that most of us have heard at some point of our
lives and careers.
And we're going to talk about how we usually react or respond to these
questions. Obviously, these are just examples to illustrate a situation.
It doesn't mean that all of us react the same way, right?
When you're interviewing for a job, someone asks you,
walk me through your resume.
And maybe you were in a social meeting and someone says, well,
nice meeting you. Tell me about yourself. Well,
with the first question, walk me through your resume.
Sometimes we just take a step back and think, what do they really want?
Should I start from the beginning? Should I follow my timeline?
Should I start from my last job? Um,
what exactly should I say?
And then when people ask us to talk about ourselves,
we usually start talking about our roles in life, right? Oh,
I work as X in company Y. I'm a mom to,
two, three, and I live in wherever.
It's kind of our demographics basically, not interesting.
You don't hook someone in conversation when you talk about this topic.
So even with the resume example,
we know that what's happening is that the person never read your resume.
So they're asking you to tell the story.
So that's a huge opportunity for you to tell your story.
Do not follow the template of a resume because it's boring.
We all think resumes are boring. Turns out that this questions,
all they mean is please tell me a story,
a good one because we're humans. We love the movies.
We love reality shows.
We love to read the humans of New York posts.
We love stories the same way used to love stories. When we were kids,
no one has ever asked their parents, Oh,
please show me a PowerPoint or read the document for
me. No, people want stories.
So that's what you should be giving them. Unfortunately, as business women,
we are not as good as it, as we should be. And it's not our fault.
Our storytelling is the by-product of an oppressing society of all the
harassment we suffered and the limiting beliefs that were imposed on us as we
were raised. Plus how they aggravated throughout our careers.
There are so many limiting beliefs that people still repeat without even
thinking about them. Oh, women talk too much. Oh,
maybe if I'm being interrupted so much is because I'm not relevant.
I need to focus one thing only. So does my story.
I need to talk about only one thing. Stories without data are weak.
No, not true.
We should reframe our thoughts because shutting up women is historical.
Impolite people interrupt.
First gum did not have a focus and he made sure we learned the skills that he
built. And there is a distorted concept about what data is.
It's not only numbers.
There are lots of pieces of information that you should be leveraging.
But as we're talking about changing this behavior and starting to tell our
stories, it's critical to remember that we should take it slowly,
step-by-step. You're not going to change everything all at once.
Start with little experiments, try new things,
use the test and iterate model. See what works for you.
Just remember that too many standards won't make you remarkable.
You don't have to be perfect because perfection is a construct that does not
exist. So in the next videos,
I'm going to share some tips and tricks on how to tell your story,
how to become comfortable being a storyteller and talking about yourself.
And I hope you enjoy it. If you like it, tell me so here, share the video,
