The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) is the aerial warfare branch of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army, responsible for defending Iran’s airspace and conducting air combat, reconnaissance, and strike missions. It was originally established in 1925 as the Imperial Iranian Air Force and was renamed after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Headquartered in Tehran, the IRIAF operates a mixed fleet of U.S., Russian, and domestically upgraded aircraft, including F-14 Tomcat, F-4 Phantom II, F-5 Tiger II, MiG-29 fighters, and Su-24 strike aircraft.
