Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio
(1571–1610) was the revolutionary Italian Baroque painter who transformed Western art by bringing a gritty, "street-level" realism to sacred subjects.
Artistic Innovation
Caravaggio's style, known as Tenebrism, used extreme Chiaroscuro (light and dark contrast) to create a "spotlight" effect that made figures emerge dramatically from pitch-black backgrounds.
Radical Realism: He rejected the idealized beauty of the Renaissance, instead painting saints with dirty fingernails, wrinkled skin, and worn clothing.
Working Method: Unlike his peers, he often painted directly onto canvas from live models without using preparatory sketches. Video by @ArtMoneyTime
