Infant dies in ambulance crash in Frankford; driver suspected of DUI

Action News has obtained surveillance video showing the moments after a tragic crash involving an ambulance in Frankfort. An infant was killed and the baby's mother is now badly injured. That ambulance driver is suspected of being under the influence. Action News reporter Kathryn Scott is live on the scene in Frankfort for us this morning with what we're learning about this terrible crash. Kathryn? That's right. We're at the intersection where it happened in Frankfort. And the bumper flew off one of the vehicles and you can see it still right over there this morning. Though most of it has been cleaned up. But sources say the driver of the ambulance is actually a family member of the mother and baby. Police saying he will face charges including driving under the influence. It's so sad. It hurts my heart. I'm just praying for them. This is surveillance video obtained by Action News. You see the MedStar ambulance in the intersection of Torsdale and Harbison in Frankfort. It hits a car, strikes a pole and flips to its side. The other vehicle then crashes into the building. That's real sad. I had to walk over here to see it for myself. Around 5.15 yesterday morning police say a family on Dittman Street called 911 when a two-month-old baby now identified as Marion Harris was unresponsive. Sources tell Action News that the infant's 51-year-old grandfather is a longtime employee of MedStar and that before first responders arrived, the grandfather began to drive the private ambulance to the hospital with a 33-year-old mother and infant. Investigators say he was driving under the influence at a high rate of speed with no lights or sirens when he went through a red light and struck this Honda Accord with a 25-year-old driver. It was like several different noises and I wasn't sure exactly what it was. I came outside and I just saw a bunch of police cars coming in the neighborhood. Police say the force of the crash sent the mother and her baby through the windshield. Both were taken to the hospital where police say the infant was pronounced dead. The mother is in critical condition. The driver of the Honda refused treatment at the scene. I'm just sorry and I pray for the family that they can get through this. Police say the driver of the ambulance also went to the hospital. We're waiting to hear back from the medical examiner's office regarding the baby's cause of death.
