The Thunder defeated the Timberwolves, 116-103 tonight in Oklahoma City. Chet Holmgren finished with a team-high 21 points along with 9 rebounds and 3 steals for the Thunder, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander tallied 20 points, 10 assists and 3 rebounds in the game. Julius Randle recorded 32 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. The Thunder improve their record to 53-15 with the win, while the Timberwolves fall to 41-27 for the season.
Conference Finals opponents meet today at PACOM Center in Oklahoma City as the reigning champion Thunder hosts the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Two of the top three scorers in the NBA will be on display.
Reigning MVP Shea Giotis-Alexander, another signature performance Monday, hitting the game winner against Denver.
For Minnesota, 24-year-old Anthony Edwards, who hit the go-ahead basket in one of two wins against Oklahoma City this season.
Oklahoma City atop the NBA standings, winners of seven in a row, Minnesota currently in fifth, but only two losses away from the play-in this season.
Of DiVincenzo Edwards, who's playing through an injury today, McDaniels, Julius Randle, and Rudy Gobert.
And for Oklahoma City, a different starting line-up, A.J. Mitchell in his third game back after missing 20 due to injury, making his 11th start of the season.
He'll be in the backcourt with Giotis-Alexander.
Dort, Holmgren, and Hartenstein, who was listed as questionable.
After missing the last three game starting line-up, which is crazy when you think about a team that's got the best record in the NBA by three games.
It's a tribute to that.
Giotis-Alexander spinning, falling away.
Front-rimmed it, batted back out, great look.
First possessions, had to be a frustrating start.
Back-to-back empty possessions for Minnesota, Giotis-Alexander.
Hartenstein again, another possession created.
And underneath, Holmgren wide open, bad defense.
7-0 Oklahoma City.
One of the hottest teams in the NBA, winning seven straight.
McDaniels swing, Randle for three.
A much-needed hit for Julius Randle.
He's a catch-and-shoot guy, he too has scuffled.
Yep, Nas Reid as well, McDaniels, miserable from three of them.
DiVincenzo attacking, skips through the lane.
McDaniels driving, pulls off, and banks it in.
He's got an at-arrest disadvantage.
And Christmas Day, they could not put the ball in the ocean.
So that is a matchup we hope to see.
DiVincenzo drains it.
Another one-and-done situation for the Wolves.
Giotis-Alexander on the back down.
Now on the fall away, he rattles it down for a second basket.
It's one-on-one isolation basketball.
And against even a good individual defender,
you can see he's going to get separation eventually.
Ayo Desumu, who's in the top ten of the NBA this season.
Under one of four from behind the yard.
Reid, challenge, lost the ball, stripped by Wallace,
who leads the league in steals.
Caruso up the floor, attacking DiVincenzo,
and gets the finger roll to fall.
On the other end, Wallace streaking to the basket this time.
Kyle Anderson checking in for Minnesota as Edwards drives,
banks it home and a foul.
Also a three-point chance here for Edwards.
Edwards watched by Giotis-Alexander.
Desumu drives, pulls up, and connects.
You made the point that he's just helpful.
Alexander Walker is a most improved player candidate
with what he's doing in Atlanta.
Had a great year for that streaking Hawks team.
Caruso swishes through a straight-on triple.
Two minutes to go in the opening quarter.
Edwards defended by Case and Wallace.
He creates some airspace and knocks it down from 15.
Again, no second-chance opportunities really for Minnesota.
Anderson takes it away.
First turnover by the Thunder.
On the other end, the floater from Desumu.
And there's the speed that he injects into this.
And obviously...
...Malma City in that first quarter.
On the bench to start the second.
He has just four points as Hyland drills a three
to give Minnesota its first lead.
I think you saw Mark Degnaud go over to the official.
I thought certainly on that last play,
there looked to be some contact as Isaiah Joe
gets a mid-ranger to Paul.
Desumu, nice move.
His floater is there.
Do you see what I mean?
That transition, that pace.
Here's Mitchell, spinning, scooping,
and hitting off the window.
What do you notice about this guy?
80% shooting from the floor.
And two of eight from three.
Shot clock at five.
Joe drives.
His scoop not there,
but the follow is for home run.
Steve Ancenzo on the drive.
Able to gather and finish off Glass.
He's a tough nut now.
He's going to play through.
They got a clean block.
He just keeps playing.
Ten turnovers to 11 baskets.
McDaniels has three fouls.
The Thunder with only seven points off the turnovers.
McCain misfires, but Wallace got McCain another look at it,
and the three is good.
Productive on the offensive glass, Oklahoma City's been.
16th game for McCain.
Came over from Philly and a trade at the deadline.
Randall on the attack, gets his second field goal.
Sitting in a low scoring game, up one.
Wallace penetrates, blocked by Highland,
and off to Sumu's leg out of bounds.
It will stay with the Thunder.
Eight on the shot clock.
He's got to stay with Isaiah.
Joe here is coming to get it off the screen again.
He doesn't, and Joe's three is good.
So that time he didn't stay.
From New York.
McCain for three.
Got it again.
Think about the acquisition.
You essentially bought low because he was coming off the injury
and out of Philadelphia's rotation,
but he's a terrific player as Julius gets paint touch.
So now Julius has scored twice.
Edwards on the cut, back out.
Randall rattles down a triple.
Yeah, once you get the paint touches going,
it feels like forever.
Wallace in traffic, in trouble.
Gets out of there.
Shot clock down to five.
Joe, open three, is there.
Joe splashing home another three-pointer.
So if you give him vision on the rim from three, look out.
Gobert, kind of a lazy catch attempt there.
Just fumbles the ball away.
How about Edwards?
Swatting it back at home.
Three to play on the first half.
Edwards trying to get going.
Randall goes at the chest of the defender, kicks it out.
To Sumu.
Good on a three.
But that's Julius Randall in a nutshell.
They need both.
Fell off the rim at the last second.
To Sumu who's got 12 points, by the way.
Five of five.
Now six of six.
And three of three from behind the arc.
And I keep harping on it.
They play without it.
And again, it's both pieces of that.
That ties the game.
Nice speed, Julius Alexander.
Caruso this time makes the layup.
You've got to have some grit defensively.
Get back.
Shea will pick you apart.
Randall, nice turnaround.
Randall having his best half in a while.
There he is.
There is the guy.
Mitchell penetrates.
Sweeping left-hander.
No.
SGA with a rebound.
Finds Caruso.
And he hangs and finishes.
Look at Shea hang him.
Making plays.
He's got four assists.
Edwards three.
Got it.
Anthony Edwards with his first three ball.
And Minnesota back into his fifth rebound.
Edwards leans in.
Fires.
Connects.
Back-to-back threes for Anthony Edwards.
Timeout, Oklahoma City.
Shot clock down to ten.
Randall, ten points in the second quarter.
Leans in.
And free.
Zumu will inbound.
Edwards off the ball.
Guarded by Dort.
Randall on the face-up.
Edwards can't get free.
Randall puts up the shot.
And hits.
As the timer expires.
One second to go.
And they will not even attempt the shot.
As Minnesota takes a six-point lead to the locker room.
Under seven-game win streak as Mitchell gets to the basket
and finishes to start the third.
He doesn't need a lot of coaching.
Dignault says, I stay out of his way.
And because of that, SGA actually appreciates coaching more so
when you give him that space.
So, that's what Dignault does.
Seems to work pretty well for Shea on most nights.
The remarkable consistency on the floor and off the floor of Gilgis Alexander
right on cue.
Three fouls in the first half.
Just two points.
Shot clock at two.
Steven Chenzo with one.
Gets it away in time and banks it in.
Boy, he had to glance at that clock to make sure.
He's got seven-point-seven rebounds.
Holmgren goes up and hits over McDaniels from the mid-range.
Team leading 13 points for Holmgren.
A career-high 17 on the season.
Randall floats to the rim.
He just feels different today, doesn't he?
Like, it feels like the juice and the confidence is back.
A comfort level with his offensive game that we haven't seen in a while.
Gilgis Alexander.
Randall punches it off the window.
On a night-by-night basis.
I feel like Anthony can still drift on certain nights
if the caliber of opponent is not good.
He's still young, folks, but if he can.
Steven Chenzo spots up.
Cans a three-pointer.
And the lead is seven.
Mark Dignault calls a timeout for Oklahoma City.
His worst shooting game of the season right now.
Again, 127 straight games with 20 points.
Randall, nine in the quarter, 26 on the day.
All points per game, only 14 since the All-Star break,
but busting out here today.
Joe floats up, bounces in.
Gilgis Alexander driving on Desumu, stops.
The double comes, and he has to kick it out.
Joe rising up.
Most importantly, he knows how to find spots on the floor.
He just keeps moving into it.
Two-pointer to Desumu.
That's his first miss.
He was six of six in the first half.
And the putback by Reed.
Anderson working the lane.
Underneath, Gobert.
Blocked at the rim by Gilgis Alexander.
Great feed, SGA.
Williams gets the layup.
That's the key, Dave.
I mean, it's not.
It's been a war.
13 overall.
Caruso with a kickout.
Joe wide open to tie it up.
It's good.
Shot clock at seven.
Edwards driving through the lane.
And he scores.
First basket of the third.
He has now valuable tangible experience.
And he finds Caruso, the trailer, who attacks Edwards and scores.
Edwards doubled with two.
He's got to put it up.
And it's blocked by Williams.
Now switching.
Gilgis Alexander on him.
Shot clock at four.
Corner three.
Desumu.
Good.
Big hit.
The win streak to eight.
It's their longest streak since they won 16 to get to 24 and one.
McDaniels playing with four fouls.
And Holmgren scores over him.
Just five for the Thunder.
Mitchell, great look.
Caught in traffic by Holmgren.
Hardenstein behind the back to McCain who buries a three.
That's where you jump out even if you're 20 feet away from him.
Joe, double clutch and connects in the lane.
Minnesota the lead up to 11.
Point games.
Doesn't appear that today's going to be the second time as he misses another foul shot.
It's four for eight.
Oh, stop it.
Switches four and three-halves between his legs to an easy three.
A slam by Gobert.
How about the pick-up by Sanford?
With SGA still on the bench and still at ten points,
ten away from keeping the streak alive.
Really well-run organization.
And give the league credit for setting up a system that gives these a chance.
Missed right now.
He's five of seven from three.
They were down seven late in the third.
Now they're up 15, and the bench has 57 of the hundred points.
Dave Ancenzo answers for three.
This is an important moment, right?
Dave Ancenzo rocking it and has his pocket picked.
A turnover.
It's number 21 for Minnesota.
Gildas Alexander downhill.
Working here on Dasumu, trying to create space with that step back.
And he's got it.
A little smile crosses his face.
As Coach Mark Dagnold says, yes, he wants to be one of the greats,
but he also wants to be one of the guys.
In terms of how he talks to his teammates,
his availability for the young players, how he navigates.
That is the concerning thing about Minnesota.
The lows for the Wolves are really low.
Giving up 153 to the Clippers as they turn it over.
But Minnesota turned it on in the postseason last year.
They're certainly capable and talented enough,
and they have a great coaching staff.
As Randall kicks to the corner, Dave Ancenzo's three is on target.
Back within 12.
Number one two years ago and 60 years ago, can they get stops?
Gildas Alexander for three.
Hit it.
You can't just assume that lob is there.
They entered to the elbow.
They expect that.
It's been well scouted by Minnesota.
Power move by Randall.
Yeah, not sure SGA cares much about whether he gets 20 or not.
We saw that highlight, as you mentioned,
pointing to throw the lob.
It's a basket.
It's good.
So the Thunder will win its eighth straight game, 11 of 12,
since the all-star break.
Joe with the dunk.
Drops to 41 and 27, and they lose the tiebreaker with Denver.
Plus, they're only a game ahead of Phoenix for the sixth spot,
and right now they lose the tiebreaker with the Sun.
So the Wolves in danger if they don't find themselves.
They had a nine-point lead in this game and now trail by 15.
That was mid-third quarter when they had that lead.
Yeah, but don't you think that's when the game changed,
when the pressure from Oklahoma City.
Yeah, it's 128 consecutive, but it's also done through winning.
Throw down there makes it a 13-point game.
See if they can find some of that magic from the postseason of the last two years.
Clark's three no good, but a foul.
Thunder improved to 29-6 at home.
They've won seven straight here at KCOM,
and eight straight overall with a 116-103 win.
Impressive.
It's a hard-earned 20 to keep the streak alive.
What can you say about your day and just staying the course throughout it?
Yeah, at the end of the day, it's basketball.
I went out there with the same aggression I do every night.
More shots didn't fall tonight than do, and usually that's not the case.
But some nights go your way, some nights don't.
Regardless, I feel like I contributed enough for our team to get a W,
and that's first and foremost.
Walk out of here with a W, good homestand, and we got to get ready for the road trip.
Chet, what does it say about your MVP?
Chet, what does it say about your MVP that even when his shot wasn't falling early,
he was still impacting the games in other ways?
We see that every night.
It might just get overshined by all the scoring that he does,
but he just wanted to keep the game suspenseful for y'all,
and we had a great one tonight.
Chet was a driving force, obviously, but your bench was fantastic.
Over 60 points from those guys.
What can you say about them?
Yeah, they came ready to play.
That's our secret weapon.
We're so deep.
So many guys that go out there and make a difference.
So many guys that impact the game at a high level.
Tonight we needed it, and tonight they came through for us.
Great job keeping it going.
