Three Bible Characters Who Encountered God ๐ Moses's encounters with God are foundational to the Old Testament. Three prophets that saw God. Moses, a pivotal figure in the Bible, is said to have experienced
God's presence in a series of remarkable encounters. The most significant of these
encounters occurred on Mount Sinai, where God revealed himself to Moses in the form of a burning
bush. Exodus 3, 2, 6. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a
bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire, it did not burn up. So Moses thought,
I will go over and see this strange sight, why the bush does not burn up. When the Lord saw that
he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, Moses, Moses. And Moses said,
Here I am. Do not come any closer, God said. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are
Abraham. God appeared to Abraham in the form of three men and promised him that he would become
the father of a great nation. This encounter solidified Abraham's faith in God. Genesis 18,
1, 3. The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the
entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing
nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low
to the ground. Elijah, Elijah, a prophet who lived in the ninth century BCE, is known for his
unwavering devotion to God and his fearless confrontation against the idolatrous practices
of the Israelite people. Elijah is said to have experienced a powerful theophany, a manifestation
of God's presence, on Mount Carmel, proving to Baal worshippers who is the true God.
Kings 18, 36, 39. At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed,
Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and
that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, Lord, answer
me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God and that you are turning their hearts back
again. Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the
soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate
