A Serene Courtyard House Designed for Light and Privacy | Casa Makay

Located in the warm, subhumid climate of Colima, Casa Makay is a thoughtfully designed home that prioritizes intimacy, natural light, and a harmonious relationship with its environment.

The architecture is carefully organized to guide the eye toward the heart of the house. At the center of the design lies a courtyard and terrace that act as the main spatial anchors of the home. Over time, vegetation gradually occupies these spaces, blending naturally with gravel surfaces and reinforcing the project’s calm and cohesive aesthetic.

The house embraces an open and connected spatial layout. Living areas flow into one another, allowing natural light and ventilation to move freely throughout the interior. This approach creates comfortable environments where indoor and outdoor spaces feel closely intertwined, producing a tranquil atmosphere that reflects the climate and lifestyle of the region.

Materiality plays a central role in defining the character of the architecture. A restrained palette of monochromatic tones and natural textures brings a sense of unity and elegance to the design.

Ivory-colored concrete forms the foundation of the project’s visual identity. Created using a blend of white cement, gray sand, and gravel, it is applied across walls and floors to produce a continuous and uniform surface that reinforces the minimalist architectural language.

Contrasting this smooth geometry is the use of San Andrés flagstone. Its irregular texture and varied tones introduce warmth and visual richness, balancing the precision of the concrete surfaces.

Wood also contributes significantly to the atmosphere of the house. Parota wood is used for the carpentry elements, adding warmth and natural character that contrasts beautifully with the stone and concrete materials. Meanwhile, gray aluminum window frames with black detailing provide a subtle yet refined architectural accent.

Beyond its materials, Casa Makay is an exploration of light and spatial rhythm. Through a careful composition of volumes, beams, and slabs at varying heights, the architecture creates a dynamic interplay of shadows that evolve throughout the day.

This volumetric arrangement extends from the exterior to the interior, maintaining a consistent architectural language that ties the entire house together. The result is a balanced environment where structure, material, and light work in harmony.

Walking through the house becomes a sensory experience. Each space reveals new textures—from the smoothness of wood to the rough character of natural stone—while shifting shadows animate the surfaces over time.

Casa Makay ultimately stands as a quiet yet powerful example of contemporary residential architecture in Mexico: a home designed not only to shelter its inhabitants, but also to immerse them in a subtle dialogue between space, light, and material.
