As the sun sinks toward the horizon in Pierre Park,
the king of the swamp, Troy Landry,
and his deckhand, Pickle Wheat,
are wrapping up a disappointing day,
catching nothing but small gagers
in one of Troy's favorite honey holes.
Man, we're in a hatchery over here.
All we're catching is babies.
Look at the size of them little babies.
Very flush with it.
We're not catching good. We're struggling.
It's real hard to catch your big alligators.
They know they're being hunted.
We gotta make changes very soon, very quick.
Yesterday morning, listen,
I heard some guys talking,
and they said they got a real good spot.
We've been fishing our old spots for a little while.
What you think, Captain?
What I think is you can't listen to other people.
We sit at the coffee pot in the morning every morning,
and I've grown a relationship with these old men,
our locals around here, and I like to trust them,
and I want to listen to their advice.
And right now, I'm hearing that they've saw
huge alligators in this one area.
I'm really gung-ho. I want to try it out.
I want to listen to my locals, and let's just see what we catch.
It's worth the gamble today.
I really want to go.
They said they got a bunch of giants over there.
They see them all the time.
I know everybody says that, but I really want to try it out.
What do you think?
I know where you're coming from.
They pump you up, you get excited,
but I got burned so many times,
I almost rather just stick to my routine.
We got so many places to hunt already.
We can't just go out on every wild goose chase
every time somebody tell you
there's no way they got a big alligator.
But she's part of my team,
so I'm gonna give her the respect she deserve.
I'm gonna take over that.
If you really want to go fish, I'm gonna bring you, okay?
But if it turns into a flop,
we're gonna have to catch up.
It's gonna be a day and a half we're gonna lose.
We have to catch it up.
What if we catch real good?
If we catch real good, it's gonna help us.
I get a day off or what?
Maybe. Depends how good we catch.
It's worth the gamble to me.
I got burned so many times listening to other people.
Been there, done that a thousand times.
Pee-wee think that I don't want to get out my comfort zone,
I don't want to try nothing new.
And in a way, she's right.
Nine out of ten of these trips you go on
is gonna be a waste of time.
Nine out of ten.
But I know this area where Pee-wee's talking about
and hasn't been hunted, I don't believe, in years,
but it's so far out of the way.
It's your first line, Pee-wee, right here.
This is the first one we set in your new spot,
your hot spot.
Looks tight, huh?
Tight. Yes, it does.
Nice, Pee-wee.
Grab the pole.
This could be a good one. I like it. I like it.
Looks like a good one.
Warming you up.
Mm-hmm.
Got a winter.
What you think about my hot spot?
No better than this, dude.
That's a nice one.
First line in the hot spot, the new spot.
Yeah.
Ooh-hoo.
First line.
Ooh, she's in a bond, huh?
This leviathan is a promising sign
the rumors about this new area were true.
Got some faith in me or what?
Nothing?
Nothing. Chicken hanging.
Mm-hmm.
You never know.
Yeah.
We start running lines, and there's nothing,
and there's nothing.
All afternoon, it's not paying off,
and I'm starting to wonder
whether it really was coming over here.
Yeah.
I don't know.
It's frustrating.
We were doing so good,
and now the next couple of lines just turn up empty,
and then, you know, a small alligator,
which is fine, and it's a tag,
but we still got half of our lines to run.
Let's see how we do.
Mm.
Right.
No, I'm learning that the hard way.
It is a lot of trouble to convince him to go to a new area,
and I see him getting a little worried.
I can see it on his face, the way he's talking,
but we're trying a new area, and it's always a gamble.
You get what you get.
With only seven gators in the boat,
Pickle's gamble on a new area hasn't panned out,
but they're hoping to end strong on their final line.
Yeah.
We're about to our last line,
and I'm a little disappointed.
We're not catching as many alligators
as we should be catching, and he's just kind of,
you know, of course, I told you so,
old man back there shaking his fist at me,
but anything can happen at any moment.
Maybe this could pay off.
I see a tight line.
Oh, yeah.
I see a crime scene.
I don't know what's going on, though.
Oh, my goodness.
Come on.
Ooh, hold up, Huey.
Oh, my...
I don't think it's worth coming back to, though.
This nine-footer is a good end to the day,
but the hunters aren't sold on this new hunting ground.
Thank God, because if not, it would have been a wasted day.
We can't afford to waste any time.
I was expecting to come back
and get at least ten good ones, you know?
I will.
At least we got one good one.
