Hi I'm Alex and welcome to Daily's Fruit. Today I'm going to talk about the amazing
Wampi tree and we have two varieties that I'm going to show you. This one that I'm standing
under right now on a very hot summer's day is the Yim Pei. So we have Yim Pei and I just wanted to
show you what the fruit looks like. So I personally have not seen these in the markets. They make a
great backyard tree because even though this tree, this tree is probably 35 years old,
you can also keep them pruned and keep them manageable and they'll fruit even in a pot even
when they're a really small size. So we sell grafted varieties. So the Yim Pei and Guy Sam
are grafted varieties. We also sell seedling varieties as well and what I love about these
trees is they're more suited to subtropical or tropical climates but they're also, they will
tolerate frost so that's a huge advantage. You just protect them when they're young but when they
mature they're quite a hardy tree. Now to the fruit. So you can see we've got these beautiful
clusters of fruit. The Yim Pei fruits a bit earlier than the Guy Sam so that's why I'm a huge fan of
getting a couple of varieties if you can because you really extend that harvest time. So when I
open up the fruit, the Yim Pei as well, it's a slightly bigger fruit, very floral flavor. I want
to say the inside is similar to a lychee but the flavor is very, very different. So when I just
open this up you can see it's got this translucent flesh similar to a lychee but again different
flavor with a few seeds inside. So I don't know how to describe the flavor. It's not like any other
fruit I've tasted. It's floral, it's almost got a sweet citrus undertone but there's no tartness
to these and they're really refreshing on a hot day as well. So these actually, these this year,
they're the best I've ever tasted so we're having a fantastic season. I'd love to be able to harvest
the ones higher up. I'll have to get a ladder to get those but yeah so that is the Wampi. So it
originates in China but it grows really well in this climate. What we'll do now is I'll go take
you to the Guy Sam. You can see a really small tree that we prune quite often and it still yields
huge crops of delicious fruit. Let's go. Okay and now we're in front of a Guy Sam Wampi. Now as you
can see you can actually keep these trees really small and at a manageable size. You can see this
is a later maturing variety so again a great way to extend your harvest and we've got clusters and
clusters on this tree and this is heavily pruned every year. We use this for grafting material,
for our nursery trees. So this one we've just got a couple of fruit just starting to come on now
but these are the first of the season. So there you have it. That's the Wampi. Beautiful evergreen
tree, very ornamental and such a unique fruit that would be very difficult to find. I've never
seen them in local supermarkets or anything like that. If you're wanting to read up more about each
variety and the differences please check out the links below and if you're interested in getting
your own we actually send to most parts of Australia. So feel free to have a look at
those links and we'll see you in the next one. Thanks for watching. Bye.
