News at six and holy oak members of the community united to show their support
for the continuation of a weekly world war two era ray air raid air raid siren.
Say that 10 times fast. 22 news reporter Kaylee thomas joins us live in studio
to explain the fight to keep it in the city. Sierra and nick for decades,
this siren at the historic warehouse now a banquet hall used to echo at noon
every friday. But most recently, city officials ordered it to be shut off
after a noise complaint. Since then, residents have taken to the parking lot
each week to honk their horns for two minutes straight, keeping the
tradition alive in a new way. The siren was stopped after a city zoning
official determined it was violating city code. It was once mounted to a
city fire station and is the last remaining siren after many were
discontinued at the end of the cold war. 22 new spoke to a resident who hopes
to see the city will find a way to get the siren back up and running again.
You hear those air raid sirens going off and I don't think there's anybody
complaining about that. You know, so it's, it's just a symbol. It's part of
Hoyoke, you know, so just let it carry on to city councilors. Michael
Sullivan and Patricia divine are looking to amend the city's ordinance
to restore the sound of the siren. If the ordinance passes, it would permit
various non emergency bells, whistles and similar devices to go off for three
minutes and any seven day period working for you. Kelly thomas 22 News.
