Finally! The James Webb Telescope Image of Neptune We’ve All Been Waiting For!

Not long ago, the James Webb Telescope sent back the clearest, most detailed images of Neptune we've seen in over thirty years, finally bringing its ghostly, glowing rings into sharp focus. Most striking in Webb’s new image is the crisp view of the planet’s rings – some of which have not been detected since NASA’s Voyager 2 became the first spacecraft to observe Neptune during its flyby in 1989. In addition to several bright, narrow rings, the Webb image clearly shows Neptune’s fainter dust bands.

While we’re mesmerized by this new view, scientists are trying to figure out why the eighth planet from the sun is getting colder when it should be warming up a mystery that’s making them question what we thought we knew about the ice giants.
