Do you need a shoe with that much cushion? That's debatable, but we'll at least help you understand what the new Nike Vomero line up is meant to do in this quick showdown.
All right my shoe fiends, we are going to talk about the
new Vomero line today now that all their shoes are out.
So the Vomero itself was entirely redesigned for this launch and it is
part of what Nike has started doing, which is this series of shoes.
So they have a base model, a plus, and a premium.
And we've got something to talk about there, right?
Okay, so the first one, the base Vomero, I really like this shoe. It is
absolutely a max cushion shoe, but I felt there was enough of a rock to it
that I could still pick up the pace if I wanted to. The other thing that you'll
find in the Vomero lineup is that while Nike has traditionally run
pretty narrow, I'm finding that the Vomero lineup
and even what they're doing in the structure has much more room through the
midfoot. So it is not as narrow as Nike has been
traditionally or as I still see in something like the Pegasus.
Okay, so base model, max cushion lineup. Then we go to the plus.
Now I have a little different opinion. A lot of people
thought that the plus is what they hoped the Vomero
base would have felt like from the beginning. I personally felt like
this is just a more expensive shoe. So yeah,
there's more cushion, but this felt more versatile to me. So
as someone who's thinking about dollars and cents,
I recommend the regular Vomero. The plus, again, entirely personal opinion. Other
people felt like they could pick up the pace a little bit better in it.
For me, it's just more shoe, and so with more shoe, there's more that your
brain has to think through. There's just more happening to be able
to pick up the pace. Now that being said, with max stack
cushion shoes, there is some cool data that shows your
brain really quickly adapts to these different heights. Obviously
there's just more there, so maybe it comes down to your foot strike, and those
who are a little bit more for foot strike may find this a little
faster. Then we get to
the biggest running shoe on the market. Yeah, seriously, it looks like a moon
shoe. It feels like a moon shoe. It is a ridiculous amount of fun to run in,
and yet I'm not sure it's really necessary for the majority of us.
As they'll even say, not approved by World Athletics.
It's obviously well above the 40 millimeter stack height
that elites can run in. No elite is racing in this. This is
not meant to be fast. It is fun. It is a nice recovery shoe. I know folks
who are doing long runs in it. I have done up to 10 miles in it. I will
say my only caution there is, I mean, this is a lot of foot and ankle
and hip and knee. You need to have good
stability if you're going to do long runs in shoes like this.
It is fun though. Still very, very fun. But we are talking about
55 millimeters of stack. Do you remember when Hoka first came out
and everyone thought they were huge and insane?
That was only 32. Now there's very few shoes that are
only 32 millimeters in stack height. So there's your look at how they line up.
Again, significantly more expensive. So is it a must-have? No, but it's super
fun. And I think we're all kind of curious to
see where this is gonna go. So if this is
the way they want to do it, they want to have a series of three shoes for
every lineup. How do you get more than this next year?
Which honestly is part of what Nike likes to do.
So maybe this isn't the shoe that they're gonna sell
millions and millions and millions of, but they don't care.
It is putting them at the forefront of thought leadership, of innovation, of
technology. And that's a big piece of what they
simply like to be behind. So curious to see what's next, but 100%
happy to recommend the Base Vomero. And again, we'll see what updates come
in this year or next year on it.
