At least two people were killed when a tornado struck northwest Indiana as severe storms swept across the Midwest Tuesday night.

The large tornado tore through Lake Village, a small community of about 700 people in Newton County, around 7 p.m., causing widespread damage to the area, officials said in a press conference Wednesday.

An elderly couple was found dead after their home on the 8000 block of County Road 600 West was destroyed, Newton County Coroner Scott McCord confirmed. Their names have not yet been released pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

"We've so far been fortunate that no other significant injuries have been reported," Newton County Sheriff Shannon Cothran said Wednesday, noting that search and rescue efforts are still being conducted throughout the area.
