Herbert Blomstedt is one of the world's most loved and respected conductors. A lifetime's accumulated wisdom, and a deep joy in sharing great music with both players and listeners, seem to radiate from him as soon as he walks into a rehearsal room or onto the stage. In November 2024, at the age of 97, he joined us for a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 9 that will live long in the memory of everyone involved. This extract is the opening of the elegiac fourth movement, Adagio: Sehr langsam und noch zurückhaltend (very slowly and held back).
