And it's only a matter of time before I'm staring at you from the cover of a Wheaties box.
This morning with under a week until the Oscars, best actor nominee Timothy Chalamet is the main
character in a real-life controversy after saying no one cares about opera or ballet.
I admire people and I've done it myself to go on a talk show and go hey we got to keep movie
theaters alive you know we got to keep this genre alive and I don't want to be working in ballet
or opera or you know things where it's like hey keep this thing alive even though no one cares
all respect to the ballet and opera people out there I just lost 14 cents in viewership.
Chalamet made those comments in a CNN variety town hall with Matthew McConaughey last month
but the clip has spread like wildfire in recent days and ignited backlash from
the performing arts community. Ballet and opera aren't niche hobbies people opt out of for fame
they're disciplines you can only enter if you have the rare ability for them.
We don't have the aid of second takes, edits, stunts, filters, makeup.
And the Seattle opera trolling the star by offering 14 percent off seats for their weekend
performances with promo code Timothy. The critics choice is Timothy Chalamet.
The four-time Academy Award nominee had been an early favorite to win his first Oscar this year
for his performance in Marty Supreme but is now virtually neck and neck with Sinners star Michael
B Jordan who has some momentum coming off his win at the Actor Awards last week. The 30-year-old
Chalamet is a self-proclaimed arts kid. I grew up backstage at the New York City Ballet my
grandmother danced New York City Ballet my mother danced in New York City Ballet my sister danced
New York City Ballet. The big question now could this cost Chalamet the Oscar at this Sunday's
ceremony? Voting concluded on Thursday so timing may work in his favor. What I always like to
remind people is that awards season is a political campaign. While you're not going to see
outright smear campaigns you are going to see people resurfacing maybe unfavorable interviews
at times. No comment from Chalamet since those comments went viral. As far as his Oscars chances
for most of awards season it seemed like he was a lock. Michael B Jordan has the momentum now it
seems. The ballet and opera comments probably will be irrelevant if only because as you heard Kelly
say the voting closed on Thursday and this sort of went viral in recent days. We'll find out who
wins on Sunday. Right here on ABC. There we go Will. All right. Will gets 14 cent bonus.
