The castle dominated the village, which was also fortified by palisades up to the site of the present-day church. Traces of fortifications can be seen on either side of the road leading up to the castle: steep embankments and very pronounced changes in elevation. There must have been a fortified gate. The ensemble formed by the castle situated at the highest point, and the village below, arranged around a single street, is reminiscent of the early "castelnaus" (fortified villages).
