What's Inside the SpaceX Dragon shocked NASA's Astronauts...100x BETTER than Competitors!
So last uh flight was like by Soyuz and this time as a crew dragon. I was so surprised actually. Crew dragon flight was so smooth and very comfortable.
Every astronaut who has flown on spacecraft like the Space Shuttle, Soyuz or even Starliner, and then gets a chance to sit inside SpaceX’s Dragon almost always walks away with the exact same reaction: Shock. They’re shocked by how comfortable it feels. Shocked by how modern everything looks and operates. And many of them even say the same thing afterward:“This doesn’t feel like something built in this century.”
So what exactly did SpaceX change inside Crew Dragon to make it feel so far ahead of every other crewed spacecraft out there?
Let’s find out in today’s episode of Alpha Tech.

It might seem unfair to put SpaceX’s Crew Dragon side by side with spacecraft designed decades ago, icons like NASA’s legendary Space Shuttle or Roscosmos’ Soyuz. But sometimes, comparison is exactly what reveals what makes Dragon so different.
Because those differences aren’t just about technology. They’re about attention to detail. About how SpaceX didn’t just aim to build a modern spacecraft, but one that’s genuinely comfortable for the people inside it. And that’s something only astronauts can truly feel.
Recently, during the Crew-11 press conference, the crew spent an hour praising SpaceX’s Crew Dragon.
One standout voice was Kimiya Yui from JAXA, who had previously flown aboard Soyuz. He described the experience as “very smooth and very comfortable,” saying it felt like stepping into the future, with sleek touchscreens, a clean interface, and spacesuits that just looked incredibly cool.

Yui explained that he genuinely enjoyed both experiences. Soyuz, he said, lands hard on solid ground with a heavy impact, but once you’re down, it’s stable. Dragon, by contrast, offers a much softer splashdown at sea, with its own unique feel. He laughed, saying both are good in their own way. Overall, Dragon simply felt more modern and far more pleasant than anything he’d flown before.
To understand why Yui used words like “modern” and “comfortable,” we need to take a quick trip back in time into the cockpits of older spacecraft.
Take the Space Shuttle, for example. Its flight deck looked like a massive control center, packed with more than 2,000 switches, buttons, gauges, and mechanical controls. Astronauts like Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken, both Shuttle veterans, had to spend hundreds of hours memorizing the location of every control. One small mistake during launch or reentry could have catastrophic consequences.
