I've seen online videos showing people overreacting to simple things like toilet paper
And from that moment on I poured all my energy into
to truly create the heavenly dream I once had as a child
As a result this entire section of the garden will be in deep shade
all day long Therefore I want to plant all of my large trees down here
The rest of the garden with its shorter plants felt incredibly pleasant beneath my bare feet
Here the 98 mother trees are vital for protecting the seedlings as they sprout
And here is what the shelter for my little tree looks like today
Hello and welcome back to the wild garden of Doquity Garden
You know when I was a boy I used to think this was the sound the sun made
I often lie on my back on the ground and imagine I'm just like a monkey
Suddenly finding himself in a forest brimming with his favorite foods a forest of sustenance
I'm now 54 years old and that dream has never left me
When the lockdown began in March 2020 I started seeing videos on the interne
about how people overreact to simple things like toilet paper
And from that moment on it has driven all of my energy into
o truly create the heavenly dream I once had as a child
In this episode of the wild garden I'll show you how I planned it
ow they cultivate and protect their food forest
It all began with my first tree the mango tree
Since this is one of my all-time favorite vegetables I had to plant it first
So I dug a large hole and planted it right next to a wallaby kangaroo
what I found on the way after a minor traffic incident as they call it in Australia
It's a proper resting place for that wallaby
rather than lying exposed right beside the roadside
Later I heard about another farming technique called the Ellen White method
also involved digging a large hole which I then covered with a mixture of compost
e plant litter topsoil and form an air pocket with rocks and assorted other debris
I did that with a few trees but to be honest I'm starting to get a bit tired of digging
Then I met Master George Lawton hello there friend—I'm the guy from the garden the one who's a bit crazy how are you doing
He is a master of sustainable agriculture and lives just a short distance from my home
and he was the first person I actually met who truly owned one of the forests I could only dream of
A place where I can run around and eat whatever
I want whenever I want just like a gorilla
As we dashed through his food forest during a
thunderstorm he explained that you are what you eat
You must be certain about what you eat for if you don't know what you're eating you won't know who you are
We often lose that connection
We define ourselves by the crops that sustain us and we must never forget that
That night it rained without stopping and I couldn't close my eyes for a single moment
Not because it was raining but because I couldn't stop thinking about creating a food forest on the hillside next to the wild garden
So I waited a few days until Geoff finished his course
then drove back there And I said
Geoff would you like to come to my garden and help me
design a food forest Do you
know what he said He replied
Yeah definitely I'm more than happy to
Great High five Let's see where this takes us
Alright
So he came and explained to me what a water retention ditch is
so I can capture the water and help it soak down to the roots of the forest garden I'm about to plant
That's when I started digging deeper quickly realizing this required even more exploration than the method of Ellen White
I dug and kept digging until I broke a toe—when I
hit a large rock I had to call on friends for help
And in just one day we completed all the rain roots
Once all that was done I had to decide which trees I wanted and where they should go
One important thing to note is that I only chose foods I personally enjoy eating mostly those
But there are also quite a few medicinal plants here
It's like having a health food store right in my backyard
This place wants to become a forest
She is giving it her all entirely self-driven proactively guiding
this land toward a balanced sustainable and resilient ecosystem
When I think about how I want my forest to be I need
to consider what I’ll plant where I’ll plant it and when
These are the key points to help clarify exactly where I want to plant the trees
For the same reason I’ll put on a small shadow puppet play right here in this garden
Here you have the directions North South East and West
Now if I plant a tree it would grow very large like a mango tree or a avocado tree or a walnut tree
Watch what happens during the winter months when the trees have grown large
If I plant it right here in the middle of the garden
The sun sits low in the sky even at noon so this entire
section of the garden remains in shade all day long
So I want to plant all of my tall trees down here
leaving the rest of the garden with the shorter plants
Thin-skinned fruits and vegetables all receive plenty of direct sunlight during winter
And that's exactly what I did
The first plants grown were ground covers and I used cowpea
It's a low-growing plant that fixes nitrogen
In the future it will become a
plant cover It helps keep the soil warm and prevents most weeds from growing
It took me just one day to plant all 70 trees Most
of them will bear fruit and some will produce seeds
and some will stay there only to support the
larger trees until they are strong enough
The root system of the support tree will carve deep pathways into the soil for
the larger fruit trees which will later utilize those very channels in the ground
after the supporting plants have died off
Most supporting plants will only remain there during the first few years of the forest garden
These large supporting trees grow quickly providing shade for sun-sensitive species
And when you cut and drop their branches and leaves
to the ground they nourish microorganisms and fungi
generating a rich diversity of microbial activity in the soil
It is precisely these that will nourish your plants
Alright okay oh look it's starting to rain now
But when it rains is actually the perfect time to plant trees
right in the middle of the rain
You see it's raining today
perfect really just perfect for planting trees
And since this little ditch is so smooth and soft I just
need to press my thumb and hand down slightly like this
Extend these small roots a little
And just place it down like this
Then I'll cover it with a few pieces of mushroom
This is a fighting avocado plant
Sometimes it's a bit tricky to remove the plant from
the pot and you may need to squeeze and pull it out
But the best way I've found is just to rest it on your lap or
on the table give it a tap hold
it steady and tap it like this
With something so small look at
the root system—
it's root-bound
This plant needs to be gently loosened a bit
They're quite loose quite loose
This one will be so happy to get down to the ground now
I grew this plant from a seed in the soil and I'll give
it a generous helping of this delicious rich soil on top
A few hand fungi
A blend of compost fermented cow manure and bone meal
The plant will thrive there I promise
A little saltwater mixed with rainwater was used to fill the healing tank
It's not easy doing this alone
Actually it's very heavy
I'll lift this up a bit
I'll press it down firmly
Just look at these roots I just need to pull
them apart slightly so
they don't get tangled
Break them apart so they don't grow in circles
Wait One more thing I did that I think
was quite clever was filling the
ditch grooves with sawdust
Gathering wood chips from the local sawmill
I do this for two reasons
First it feels incredibly pleasant under my bare feet
A few monkeys there don't wear shoes in the forest
And I'm the same way
The remaining reason I filled the ditch gaps with sawdust
is that it retains warmth more effectively over time
It will become nourishment for the trees
Within a few years or possibly even less
It will be filled with mushrooms an immense hidden network beneath the surface
If you imagine the soil as a
vast supermarket or a health food
store and plant roots as customers searching for nourishment
Mycorrhizal fungi act as sales agents for plants
telling them where beneficial resources are located
and even help bring them all the way down to the roots through
the countless tiny filaments connecting everything beneath
At this stage I think I'm doing really well A
food forest is ready All
I need to do now is wait
As you can see these small trees usually sprout beneath the canopy of their parent tree
The mother tree's crown is the vital sanctuary that shields
the seedling as it sprouts and rises into the world
To lessen the strong wind and reduce direct harsh sunlight
I made a mistake leaving everything out here exposed like this
But I'm not panicking
I'm staying calm and trying to picture how to
I'll create something like a tree canopy
I need to be the mother of this tree for a while
until it's strong enough to care for itself
And I did it
And here is the current look of the shelter for my little tree
I'm thoroughly delighted to feel as though I'm a gorilla
In the dreams of childhood
I hope you enjoyed this video
I hope you learned something
I hope this conversation inspires you to create your own
food forest—a place where you
can connect and also protect
One day you'll be able to stroll around
and eat whatever you
like whenever you want
Just like a gorilla like me
So I hope you enjoyed the video
I hope you learned something
From these beautiful healthy and happy trees this time
Wishing you a wonderful day and see you again soon
I'll leave all these empty planters for you
Have a wonderful day
