Set in London during the week of Princess Elizabeth’s wedding, the story follows American brother-and-sister dance stars Tom Bowen (Fred Astaire) and Ellen Bowen (Jane Powell) as they arrive to headline a West End revue at the height of postwar euphoria. Accustomed to living and performing as an inseparable act, the Bowens quickly find their bond tested by romance. On the voyage over, Tom meets and spars charmingly with Anne Ashmond (Sarah Churchill), a refined aristocrat engaged to be married, while Ellen is swept off her feet by debonair Lord John Brindale (Peter Lawford). Backstage, the siblings’ longtime composer and accompanist Irving Klinger (Oscar Levant) observes the unfolding entanglements with dry wit, worrying that love may fracture the act that made them famous.
