Hello, my name is Nate. Welcome to my art channel. I was very honored to be asked to be the
guest artist for the Thousand and Below Club. This is the group of artists who are fairly new to
YouTube and they haven't hit their thousand subscriber threshold yet in order to get
monetized and I'm happy to do my part to help bring some awareness to their newer channels.
They're all very good artists and you should follow them. So there's a playlist in my video
description. I hope you check those out. Give them some love, give them a like, give them a comment
and most of all, please subscribe. Since I was the guest artist, I was given the opportunity to set
the rules for our little collaboration today and I like to set rules and so that I can break them.
Okay, I asked them all to do something modern and minimal. The rules were that they could only use
three colors and including the base coat color and those three colors had to be one opaque color,
one transparent color and one metallic. For me, this is the ideal very balanced color palette
because usually the transparent colors are darker. An opaque color and a transparent color when the
consistency is thin gives you lots of variation because there's going to be blending and then
the metallic color gives it some spark and some, you know, sparkle but also it is a good mid-tone
between these dark color, light color and mid-tone. So it's very balanced and we can create something
really interesting using just those three colors. You don't always have to have 19 colors
and you don't always have to have your colors covering the entire surface. It's nice to have
some negative space to allow the eye to rest to focus on the interesting pattern that you make
or the design that you make your composition. So I'm going to do a very thin consistency
puddle pour kind of thing. You can see I'm working on a 24 inch round. This is marine grade MDF
and I have put on a coat of gesso on top of this and my opaque color is titanium white. This is
just mixed three parts US Floetrol to one part titanium white and then lots of water until it
gets to a point where it leaves no mound when it's drizzled off of the stir stick.
This is the kind of consistency that I would use for a pearl pour. It's thinner than a Dutch pour
and I'm specifically going for this consistency because I want these colors to move and blend a
lot. I have it on my spinner but I do not plan on spinning this out. I am going to tilt it
but the reason I have it on my spinner is because it'll make it easier for me to work on
multiple sides. These round shapes are very difficult if they don't have a lip on the back
to tilt. It's hard to pick them up. The paint comes underneath and makes it very slippery
on the other side so this makes it very easy for me to kind of anchor it and brace it and
tilt it without fear of dropping it or less fear of dropping it. I should say famous last words
so I'm going to pour a nice puddle of this here in the center. I probably won't need all of this
but I'm going to reserve some just in case and I'm going to spin this out a little bit
just to spread that puddle out and see how much more I need. Yeah I do need more.
Let's just go ahead and pour around. I do want to cover my whole canvas but not until I'm ready
to tilt so I just want to spread this out because when I layer my next colors I don't want to
pour them into a puddle. They'll blend too much. I want to maintain some color integrity
but we can get fairly close with this to the edge. I want to leave some room for
tilting. We're just going to move this around. See how easy it is to brace this on the spinner
and tilt. I didn't want to pound in my push pins into the back of this
since it's MDF. I didn't want to ruin the integrity of the surface. Okay
so that's probably good for now. Let's use a torch and get rid of some of these air bubbles.
There's still quite a bit of paint here so I'll be tilting a lot of this off.
The good thing about a thin consistency paint is the air bubbles rise very quickly so we shouldn't
have to worry about too much of air bubbles disrupting our pattern. I'm going to go with
the gold first. My metallic color is tri-art iridescent pale gold and I'm going to do a nice
little zigzaggy shape here in the center and then I'm going to sandwich that on either side
with Amsterdam Prussian blue phthalo. I'm going to put it on both sides but I am leaving a little
bit of a gap in between. I don't necessarily want these colors to interact too much together
and that's it. That's all of the paint layering I'm going to do. The first thing I'm going to do
is bring the paint off of the end down here. Try and kind of keep it in the center. I want to anchor
that. Come around the other side and do the same and just bring it off of the edge. That's good.
Bring the weight of the paint back to the center. There we go and now we're going to
tilt straight down this way.
Tell me that you need me, I wouldn't bother. If you're with enough, tell me that you saw me.
My cold shoulder is yours since we're older. See you got what you asked with a wish.
Now it wasn't you used to say how you needed a solid way to be yourself. Now you're free in every
way and you see I was all wrapped up. So tell me that you need me, I wouldn't bother. If you're
with enough, tell me that you saw me. My cold shoulder is yours since we're older. See you got
what you asked with a wish. So tell me that you need me, I wouldn't bother. If you're with enough,
tell me that you saw me. My cold shoulder is yours since we're older. See you got what you asked.
Well I wasn't expecting pearl cells from titanium white and floetrol but I definitely got some.
Look at this. Perfect little pearls. Aren't they pretty? Some of them were starting to show up
before I even started tilting but the ones that are arising now that it's sitting and resting
are perfectly shaped. The others got kind of got stretched out in fun ways. I think this is a great
example of using just three colors and getting lots of interest in composition but also in color
variety. Look at that. In fact if you follow the gold most metallics are also at least semi-transparent
so you can see the blue underneath that gold there and it adds a really fun shadow. I love that.
This is pretty cool. I like it. Fluid art, something always unexpected.
So let's see if this is dry in the morning. So here we have the dry results and isn't she
beautiful? I love these three colors together. That dark phthalo blue dries really dark
but it's still definitely a blue and I love how it blends into the white. Still not sure how I got
pearl cells with just titanium white and floetrol but there you go. Happy accidents. I love how the
gold blings and brings some drama and you know you can create so much interest with just three colors.
I'm super happy with this. I hope you like it too. Now let's see what the rest of the people in the
collab have done. What beautiful art they've made. If you're not joining us on premiere day
please go to the description box. There's a playlist of all of the videos in this collab.
I hope you check it out. I hope you subscribe to somebody new and find some new inspiration
and thanks again for watching. Go mix up some paints and be fearless.
