Side-Sleeping: The Best Position (Left vs. Right)
Doctors recommend side-sleeping during pregnancy ideally on your left side to maximize blood flow to your placenta and kidneys, giving more oxygen to your baby. This improved circulation can even help prevent stillbirth by ensuring baby gets enough oxygen at night. Left-side sleeping also reduces swelling. Good news: recent research says sleeping on your right side is also safe if that's more comfortable. The main rule is avoid lying flat on your back. In later pregnancy, back-sleeping can compress a major vein (the inferior vena cava), reducing blood flow to you and baby. So stick to side-sleeping as much as possible for a safe, comfy night. If you wake up on your back by accident, don't panic and just roll onto your side; your body will usually wake you if something's wrong.

Use Pillows for Proper Support
To make side-sleeping comfortable, support your body with pillows so everything stays aligned. Try these pillow placements:
-Between your knees & ankles: Put a firm pillow between your legs to keep your hips aligned. Otherwise your top leg will flop forward and twist your spine, causing back/hip pain or sciatica.
-Under your belly: Tuck a small pillow or wedge under your bump to support its weight. This prevents your belly from pulling you forward and relieves pressure on your lower back.
-Behind your back: Place a pillow behind your back as a cushion to prevent you from rolling onto it at night. (If you do wake up flat on your back, just shift back to your side.)
-Head and arms: Use a supportive pillow under your head (to keep your neck aligned) and maybe another to cuddle with your arms. Keeping your upper body comfortable and straight is important too.

When your body is in a straight line, there's less strain on your hips and spine and better circulation for baby.

Tips to Fall Asleep Faster
Even with the right position, you might need help relaxing into sleep. Try these pregnancy sleep tips:
-Keep cool: Make sure your room is cool and wear light, breathable clothes to avoid night sweats.
-4-7-8 breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8. This calming breath exercise will help your body drift into sleep mode.
-Light snack: Have a small bedtime snack like a banana, almonds, or oatmeal. These foods contain magnesium and tryptophan to boost melatonin naturally and help you get drowsy.
-Sleep-friendly environment: Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
-Sleeping on your back: Avoid this when you can. It can compress that big vein and reduce blood flow (and oxygen) to your baby.
-Too much water at night: Don't chug water right before bed you'll just wake up for endless bathroom trips. Drink more in the day and ease up before bedtime.
-Skipping naps: Don't skip daytime naps if you're tired. Being overtired by evening will make it harder to fall asleep at night.
-Wrong pillow setup: Don't use a mountain of pillows. Stick to the targeted pillow positions we showed (between knees, under belly, behind back).
