Alien shapes rise from the ground, trees that look sculpted by another planet. But this is Earth. This is Socotra, an island in the Arabian Sea cut off from Africa and Arabia for over 20 million years.

Torn away as the Gulf of Aden opened, Socotra evolved in near total isolation. Its ancient granite mountains and wind carved plateaus created harsh microclimates where only the most adaptable life survived. The result is one of the most biologically distinct places on Earth, with around a third of its plant species and the vast majority of its reptiles found nowhere else.

Iconic species like the dragon’s blood tree, with its umbrella canopy and deep red resin, are living testaments to millions of years of separation. But isolation no longer guarantees protection. Overgrazing, stronger cyclones, and climate stress are reshaping the island’s fragile balance.

Socotra is not science fiction. It is a fragment of deep time, a living laboratory of evolution, and a reminder that even the most remote worlds are no longer beyond our reach.
