Franz Nikolaus Novotný [Novittni, Novotni, Nowotny]
(Eisenstadt, 6 December 1743 - Eisenstadt, 25 August 1773)
Austrian organist and composer of Bohemian descent. He was the son of Johann Novotný (1718-1765), a musician who served as organist at the Esterházy court in Eisenstadt and studied under Kapellmeister Gregor Werner. Following the death of his father, who had served as the court's organist, he succeeded him in the position on 30 August 1765 in a post he held until his death. As a composer, his output primarily consisted of sacred works, including several masses, organ preludes, a Te Deum, and other liturgical pieces, several of which survive and reflect the stylistic influences of his era at the Esterházy court, where Joseph Haydn served as Kapellmeister. Haydn held Novotny's music in high regard, performing and praising his compositions during his lifetime. Though his career was brief, Novotny's legacy endures through his preserved organ works, which highlight the musical environment of one of Europe's most influential princely courts in the 18th century. Many works survive in Austrian, Hungarian, German, Czech and Italian archives, identified only by surname.
