Gladiators are one of the most iconic symbols of ancient Rome—but how do we actually know what they looked like, how they fought, and how the Romans understood them?
In this video, we explore Roman art as a historical source, examining mosaics and frescoes that depict gladiators and arena spectacles across the Roman world. From famous pairings like the retiarius and Secutor, to heavier types such as the Murmillo, Thracian, and Hoplomachus, these images reveal how gladiators were classified, equipped, and imagined by Roman audiences.
We’ll also look at Venationes—staged animal hunts in which professional beast-hunters faced lions, tigers, and other exotic animals imported from across the empire. These spectacles outlasted gladiatorial combat itself, continuing into Late Antiquity and the Byzantine period, long after gladiators had disappeared from the arena.
