Luyuanping, Hubei, China: The world's first elevator village
This breathtaking sinkhole village is none other than Luyuanping, a hidden gem in Enshi, Hubei Province. Nestled at the bottom of a sinkhole 1200 meters above sea level, with a vertical drop of 600 meters from the bottom to the top, it is surrounded by towering cliffs. It seems like a pristine paradise quietly hidden by nature's artistry, and to this day, it remains inaccessible by road. In the past, villagers relied entirely on treacherous cliffside paths to enter and exit the village, a time-consuming, laborious, and dangerous undertaking. It wasn't until the development of the scenic area in 2016 that over 1800 steps were built, along with what is now the world's longest inclined elevator. What used to be a two-hour trek can now be completed in just three or four minutes by elevator, transforming a once formidable barrier into a thoroughfare. The history of this hidden gem dates back over 300 years to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The Pei clan from Changde, Hunan Province, migrated to Enshi. Their initial settlement in Xintian was too high-altitude for millet cultivation, forcing them to continue their search for a more suitable place to live. Legend has it that the appearance of a white deer changed their destiny—the clansmen followed the deer and eventually arrived at this blessed land. Originally named "Luyinping" (Deer-Leading Plain), it was later renamed "Luyuanping" (Deer Courtyard Plain). The flat terrain, fertile soil, and mild climate allowed the Pei clan to take root and thrive here, remaining for centuries. Today, the villagers still adhere to the rhythm of life passed down through generations: working at sunrise and resting at sunset, self-sufficient and peaceful. The scenery of Luyuanping has also maintained its original tranquility and beauty. Lush mountains, light mists, and birdsong echoing between the sinkholes make the entire village seem like a forgotten paradise, hiding the purest nature and peace. Next, let's follow the camera and step into this serene and beautiful secret realm to unlock its unique story.
