TRAVEL FOR FOOD in THAILAND

Today we are in Chiang Mai. We are near Wat Phan Wan temple in the center of Chiang Mai,
the historic old town as they call it within the moat or the Kumwang. Wat Phan Wan. You can get a
Thai massage here for 180 baht for an hour, but today we're not here for a massage,
we are here to find arguably the best Khao Soi in the whole city. It's Thursday, it's sunny,
it's January, it's beautiful. December, January, the best time of the year to come to Thailand.
Beautiful weather, it's cold. Well, it's cold when you wake up, it's cold in the evening.
About 32 degrees during the day. Wat Phan Wan, but we are going to a special place.
Ambulance coming through. I've been coming to this particular family restaurant for
multiple years and it saddens me to say, but there are multiple generations doing it now,
and they're only open three hours a day from 8 a.m. till 11 a.m. You have to be quick,
it's a breakfast place. As I walk here, the old street, I still need google maps for Chiang Mai
because these roads or these little streets here are very confusing. Wat Phan Wan. So,
they've been open for multiple generations, have been doing this for a long time. I think
they have the best Khao Soi or Northern Thai noodle soup in the country. Gotta be quick,
8 till 11 every day and usually sold out by 10. We arrived at 10 a.m. and honestly,
beautiful here. Absolutely beautiful in the center of Chiang Mai. Many temples. We arrived
at around 10 and we still had Khao Soi, but if you come later, they're just sold out every day.
Thursday, a bit of a quiet day, but still quite a lot of people inside. They sell
a lot of like ready-made meals as well. Restaurant, not so busy, but earlier,
I guess there were many more people, some groups of tourists, Thai tourists coming in as well.
Look like that, still Happy New Year. It's a very beautiful day here in Chiang Mai. Blue skies,
I would say high 20s now. Let me pass, let the traffic go by and let me go back to the table
to see this. So, the Khao Soi has arrived. This is a family restaurant and they have
supposedly the best Khao Soi in Chiang Mai. It doesn't have all the Michelin stars and the fancy
accolades, but I think this is a really great one. So, we have the fried noodles,
let me get some chopsticks to really show you the details here. So, we have some fried noodles here,
egg noodles that are fresh, big piece of chicken in there. It's more of a creamy broth,
so it has more coconut milk or kati than regular Khao Soi you would get elsewhere,
which is stronger. Fermented vegetables, onion and lime, it's not that spicy. Looks like this
from above, very beautiful, very big bowl as well compared to my hand, quite large if you see.
I'm gonna eat this in a while, this is something I've been waiting for for almost a year.
Very simple restaurant in Chiang Mai, in the center of the old town. We've come around 10 a.m,
so we're lucky that we still have, but usually they have. But if you come late,
it's just open from 8 to 11. Little Louis wants some Khao Soi. Hello there!
We're just here with a little one. It feels like weekend, but today is Thursday.
Good Khao Soi. I haven't tried this in probably almost a year. So, January 2026 and here we go
for a great Khao Soi. Restaurant looks like this, probably busy in the morning, but now it doesn't
have so many people. It seems like we are late breakfast eaters. Simple setup, tables, chairs,
just like this. You got your cutlery right here, some dried chili. I'll show you real quick,
dried chili is not really necessary with Khao Soi, because I think it's spicy enough,
and you can make it a little bit more priyaw or sour with the lime and the fermented vegetables.
Fish sauce, but again wouldn't add this in Khao Soi. They also sell Karamji Nam Niaw,
which is a northern Thai dish, and there I would add fish sauce, but not in the Khao Soi.
You can mix this, but I prefer not to, so you retain the crispiness of the fried egg noodle,
the Ba Mee. So, it has both the fresh egg noodle, it's very hard to get it from underneath,
you can see it here, the fresh egg noodle, the yellow one, same noodle that is fried. So,
I don't mix it, because then it looks more beautiful and it stays crispy. Okay, let's
eat this bowl. This is what it looks like from above, really beautiful like that. Northern
noodle soup Khao Soi. I just tried this soup and they add more kati or coconut milk,
which makes it really, really creamy. Excuse the motorbike sounds in the background,
that's Thailand, you know, but makes it really creamy. Here they give you a normal spoon instead
of what I call a Chinese soup spoon, much easier for us foreigners. I'm certainly enjoying that.
In my opinion, this right here
is still the best Khao Soi in Chiang Mai and maybe the whole of Thailand.
Personal opinion, but it doesn't get any better than this. And as my partner tries the Khao Soi,
hers still looks beautiful and intact. Orange with white from the kati, really beautiful. Look
It's really, really good. It's really, really good. It's better than Khao Soi. It's better than
any of the Michelin rated Khao Soi by a country mile, by a country mile. So, I'm gonna eat this
now. Not too many of these, a gas explosion will follow. Louis is enjoying some Khao Soi as well,
or, well, milk. He'll get milk later with Khao Soi flavor. She didn't eat all the broth.
Oh my god. So, earlier it was a lot busier. Here they sell the toppings. They also have
Kanom Jeen Nam Niaw, the other typical Northern Thai noodle soup. Fried noodles that go in the
Khao Soi. And now they're just packing some orders. I think it's almost Mot Laew by this time. They
close at 11 a.m. Beautiful place, simple, but still the best in the city, I think.
We're going to round this off for today. I'm gonna walk outside for a bit. Let me take
check this family picture. This is a picture of the multiple generations of people cooking this
They can be proud of their heritage. Beautiful place. I'll show it from the outside as well.
Oh, there's Malacca. Unassuming. You would miss it if you didn't know about it.
Let me walk back to the temple. Did we pay already or not yet?
So, that's it. Beautiful. We'll be back here at least once a year. I'll walk back to the temple
from here. I want to hear from you. Have you ever been to this Khao Soi place in Chiang Mai or do
you know any other good Khao Soi places in the city? If you know, let me know. Send me a message.
