How the World’s Best Inkstone Is Handmade
Kim Jin-han is a Korean inkstone maker with a career spanning more than 70 years. A third-generation artisan, he inherited the tradition of inkstone craftsmanship from his grandfather and has dedicated his entire life to preserving and refining this historic art form.
Born in a region renowned for producing the special stones used to create inkstones, Kim never left his hometown. Instead, he devoted himself fully to mastering the craft, shaping each inkstone with patience, discipline, and deep respect for tradition.
In recognition of his exceptional skill and lifelong dedication, he was designated as a Korean Intangible Cultural Property for his work in inkstone making. Even after decades of experience, he continues to pursue perfection — striving to create the finest inkstone he can, one that truly satisfies his own exacting standards.
