Part 1 of an in depth series of traditional upholstery techniques. Demonstration of lathe work on an 1870's Victorian Gentleman's Chair.
I was looking for a chair to use for a weekend training seminar and one of my
friends gave me this remarkable piece. Built around 1875, still in original
upholstery. It turned out it was too complex of a job for the training
seminar so I thought I would try to document it this way. A lot of serious
damage to the frame that needs to be addressed. In making these repairs the
original webbing had to be replaced but beyond that all the spring tying and
burlap is original. Having all of this original material intact is just like a
museum find for somebody in my trade. Hand stitching with the flax string,
straw filled sides. I'm anxious to get inside this. Our outside ball dimension
is the same as the diagonal on our beginning block here so we'll turn it
down to this corner point. With the center ball turned down to size we again use
the calipers and we'll measure up these legs. We'll go to the next largest
diameter. Okay it looks like these are all three the same size. Again this
leg here is considerably smaller but I'll go for the larger leg.
All right some sanding and polishing and that's a wrap on turning our leg.
