“Xiaoxiang Shuiyun” (Misty Clouds over the Xiao and Xiang Rivers) is recorded as a composition by the Southern Song guqin master Guo Mian (courtesy name Chuwang, c. 1190–1260). The earliest surviving score appears in Shenqi Mipu. The introductory commentary states:

“Qu Xian says: This piece was composed by Master Guo Mian, styled Chuwang. A native of Yongjia, he often longed to gaze toward the Nine Peaks of Jiuyi, yet they were obscured by the clouds and waters of Xiaoxiang, through which he expressed his deep and lingering sentiments. However, ‘Shuiyun’ as a composition not only carries a freely flowing, serene elegance—evoking the shimmering light on water and drifting clouds—but also conveys the aspiration of braving wind and rain, clad in a straw cloak by the river’s edge, sailing a small boat across the Five Lakes.”

This performance follows the reconstructed (dapu) version by Master Zha Fuxi (1895–1976).
