“His & Hers” star and executive producer Tessa Thompson tells us about the smash Netflix limited series, cheering on her “Creed” family at the Golden Globes - and admits the one annoying thing Michael B. Jordan is guilty of!
Congratulations on the Golden Globe nom for Hedda.
Oh my gosh, and I was watching you on the red carpet.
I was at home and I was eating my popcorn watching you girl.
You have got to, tell me about this fierce red carpet look.
Thank you so much.
This dress, I just love.
Pure Palo Balenciaga, made it especially for me.
It's sort of paying homage to the dress
that I wear in Hedda, which is this green dress.
And I just felt like a little snakes, you know.
Oh.
Slinking around the party.
Girl, you weren't slinking around nowhere.
You just, it was just like, ah.
It just kept, from every angle.
Thank you.
No, but you know, some of the dresses
and some that I tried on have the big trains.
Yeah.
Which sometimes is amazing
because sometimes someone will step on it
and you turn around and it's like,
you're like, oh my God, it's this person.
Yes.
And that's really nice.
But this didn't have too big of a train.
I actually, they had a sprinter van ready for me.
And then I chose this dress and instead
I went to the Golden Globes in a golf cart.
In a golf cart.
No sprinter van for you.
That's what I was going to say.
It had a little bit of a train.
I remember being on the red carpet and I had a long train.
And I said, never again, because when people step on it,
you keep jerking.
Yes.
And that's the worst thing.
But when it is a big name, were you irritated
and then you turn around and go, oh shoot.
I want to work with you.
Yes, or I've like stepped on it.
Like I think that night I maybe stepped on Ariana Grande.
But I was like, nice to meet you.
Maybe we'll work together one day.
Yeah, it's nice.
You never know who you'll bump into.
I love it.
And over there at the Golden Globe,
it was so many stars walking around.
A lot of them.
Like you got to tell me, your Creed co-stars,
Ryan Coogler, Michael V. Jordan were there.
And they won for Sinners.
So sitting there, y'all such family.
How did that feel?
Oh my goodness.
I'm just so proud and excited for them.
And anytime they win, I feel like I do too.
And that night also Jesse Buckley is a friend.
So I was just like on my feet screaming.
It was just a lovely night of getting to celebrate
so many people that I love and adore.
It must be a big night at the Golden Globes
where you just, you're kissing everybody.
You're hugging, you're kissing everybody there.
Every single person, yeah.
Yeah.
Oh man.
Or you're wanting to hug and kiss every single person.
You know, you're looking across the room like,
why I bet, oh, if I could, you know?
If only.
Do you try to catch an eye?
Like when you sit at the table?
Well, I was with my mom.
So I was on my best behavior.
Sure, I think that's a room where you could.
Well, your mama can't see everything though.
Fair.
And I have to say, because we're talking about centers,
but I love the Creed movies.
And when you came, you came here with the rest of the cast.
But what I love, one of the things that I love
about the Creed movie is your chemistry
with Michael B. Jordan as a married couple.
It's so good.
It's so, even like when you had the sign language
and it was just like, you know,
what is the secret of having a good married couple chemistry?
Oh, goodness.
I mean, we're both unmarried, first of all.
So we're good at pretending, but I would say,
you know, we've been making these films
over 10 years together.
So at this point we're kind of like family
and we are like an old married couple.
We know each other so well.
And in fact, when we went to make the last Creed,
we actually went to therapy together,
but as Bianca and Adonis.
You did.
You did couples therapy together as the characters.
Yes.
Did you learn things about each other?
First of all, I learned that people need
to go to couples therapy.
I should have done it in some of my past relationships,
maybe then I wouldn't be married.
But so I learned that.
And then I just, you know, he's such a delight
and such a lovely person.
But I think what we learned is that
when you're in a long-term relationship,
not even married, just friendship,
we know with our families, it's so great
to get in there and talk about any of the issues
that maybe you just don't have the chance to,
you know, in your day-to-day.
So when y'all went to couples therapy,
is there anything, like, was there anything
he found out about you that's like so supremely annoying?
And did you find, was there any,
is he, was there any annoying thing
that Michael B. Jordan had?
You know what I have to say?
He's annoyingly not annoying.
What?
Yeah, he's pretty great.
Like-
He cannot be as perfect as we think he is.
As great as he, as great as he seems
is as great as he is.
I would say the one thing that maybe I haven't told him
that is, I would say, not annoying,
it's cute, but it's challenging.
He will FaceTime you without warning you
that he's going to FaceTime you.
He does that?
Yes, and for whatever reason,
I'm never, it's not cute on my end.
Do you know what I mean?
Uh-huh, uh-huh.
Like, I'm not ready to be-
Yeah.
On the FaceTime.
On a big, on the screen.
With him.
Yeah.
Yeah, so I would say that's the only thing.
But does, do you, does he have you now
or do you not answer it now
or do you go, oh shoot,
and you've already pushed the button?
No, I don't, well, now he's gonna know.
Sometimes I don't, sometimes I don't answer
and really quickly get myself together.
And then I'm like, oh, sorry, I was just, I was, sorry.
It's funny because I talked about that
in one of my Hot Topics
because I didn't think that men like FaceTiming.
I thought FaceTime was a, like, with women, we like doing.
I know, but the men in my life are big FaceTimers.
They're big FaceTimes.
Yes.
Have they ever caught you in like a crazy position
just when you?
Yes.
Yes, they have.
Well, I don't let Michael B. catch me in no crazy position,
but Colman Domingo.
Yes.
Is always FaceTiming me.
Is he really?
Yes.
Always.
He FaceTimed me the Golden Globes morning
and I was in the bath.
You were in the bath, so?
But I answered.
Favorite thing, especially,
because he loves to FaceTime me before red carpets
where we're gonna see each other.
And he'll be like, girl, what you got on?
And I was like, nothing, I'm in the bath.
So he approves the outfit.
Yes, he loves to.
Because you just critique.
Yes, he loves to approve the outfits, yeah.
It's so funny because when I was doing my Hot Topic, Tessa,
I wanted to FaceTime my friend, stand-up comedian, Luenell.
And I said, I said, she didn't know.
And I said, let's do it.
And I FaceTimed her.
She was in the bathtub, too.
You're not the only one.
This must be, I love her, fabulous.
Oh my gosh.
This must be the mark of true friendship.
It really is.
Will you answer their FaceTime?
Will you answer the FaceTime?
And she did, and she said she vows to get me back.
I'm scared.
Oh man, I want to congratulate you
because when I tell you, everybody on staff and crew
is watching his and hers.
Can you tell us about it?
Yes.
Well, I'm afraid to spoil it, but it's based in a book.
My production company, Viva Mod, developed it.
So we built it from the ground up.
I'm just so proud that we got to make the show.
And now I cannot believe that so many people
across the globe are watching it.
It's just, thank you everybody.
Thank you so much.
I love this.
And so you have Jon Bernthal, who I am obsessed with.
I love him.
You guys are so good together.
We had fun.
Man, I'm telling you, no matter what the conflict is,
the chemistry is so great.
So was that you that decided on Jon Bernthal?
Yeah, he was one of the first,
if not the first person that we thought of.
I'm just such a fan of his work.
And by all accounts, he's such a lovely guy.
And he is, he really, he's the kind of guy
that comes to set early, knows every single person's name,
asks them how their weekend was, knows about their family.
And he's just an absolute delight.
But he takes you there.
He really takes you there.
He's just a fantastic actor.
And I love to make fun of him for this
because he wears the craziest things to set
when he comes early.
Really, what does he wear?
Well, he usually wears, he wears a hoodie with sweatpants,
but he tucks in the hoodie to the sweatpants.
And then he tucks in the sweatpants to the socks.
Oh my gosh.
And that's what he wears every single day.
So one day I came as that, him,
and I got some people on the crew to come as him.
So he ever gets into humor.
So he can understand what he's giving us every morning.
The energy.
Yeah.
That, you know, that pants tucked in socks energy
is something special.
It is really, truly extraordinary.
Oh my gosh.
Is there, you know, are there any other things
that you like, and you like producing,
you like developing.
I love it.
I love seeing a woman doing this.
That's why I just,
because so many Tessa, so many women are just like
to step out and do that.
And you know, it's, we don't get the chances
that our counterparts get.
Has it been a, has it been a big struggle
trying to get things out that you want to produce?
Yeah, I would, I would be lying if I said
that there aren't challenges,
but I think that's what I enjoy about it.
And I think, you know, if you don't,
if there's something that you don't see,
if there's a void, I think you have to,
you have to make it, you know?
And I think also the incredible opportunity
to work with folks like I, you know,
I'm the executive producer on this new film called Seeds,
a documentary about black farmers across America.
It opens tomorrow in New York.
These kind of stories that are so important
that we don't get to see,
especially folks that look like us,
you know, we have to be, we have to be in charge
of really taking our stories into the world
and demanding that they be seen
and saying that they're important, so.
It's like Tiana, it's like, you know,
Tiana Taylor said, our dreams deserve space.
Yeah, which by the way, I cried at her speech
at the Golden Globes,
just because I thought it was so beautiful.
And that's exactly why I wanted
to start my production company
is to say that we deserve space, our dreams.
And even, and especially when we are messy,
we deserve still to take up space.
