#lizakoshy picks out her 2019 Met Gala ensemble at Balmain’s Los Angeles boutique. In Paris, Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing explains his vision for the dress as a piece of "architecture" and Amanda Ramirez, head of embroideries at Balmain, details the hard work behind the creation. In New York, Liza has her final fitting and decides on her hair, makeup, and nails for the event. See the moments leading up to Liza’s second year at the Met Gala.
The very first fitting was in LA.
There were four beautiful couture pieces
waiting for me to slip my little body inside of them.
And I did.
Because I'm back for the second Met.
They shut down the store for me to come in.
I have yet to see any of the dresses.
I'm very excited.
Alright, come on over.
This is them on the rack?
That's them?
Oh my God.
Don't touch my dress.
Girl, look at this.
This is so cool.
I have never worn anything like this.
Hello?
Actually, this is the closest I've gotten to wearing something like this before.
I just want to talk to you real talk for a second.
Like, favorites.
I think the pink is amazing,
but I also think this other one
could be pretty spectacular on you.
So let's go put this Balmain on.
Oh my God, that's heavier than I thought it was going to be.
Here we go.
Oh, there's the pants.
Oh, hello.
I'd give you full pants too.
It's art.
It's definitely art.
It's definitely campy.
Your legs are so beautiful.
Like, I want to see your legs.
Yeah.
My first red carpet.
I went to Wet Seal,
bought a bodycon dress,
and I went to Forever 21 and bought some heels,
and went to my first red carpet ever.
And there ain't nothing wrong with that.
I was wearing Forever 21 yesterday, that's right.
But it's cool to be able to evolve on the inside as a human being,
but to be able to show it on the outside too
and show that we leveling up.
Shout out to Ciara.
But I think I'm going with more of a dress look.
Let's see if look number two is for you, boo.
Let's go.
Look number two coming at you.
Yeah, better than number one.
Okay.
I definitely think the first look was less campy than this one.
It's really cool being in Balmain,
because usually I'm shopping at Baby Gap.
All right, let's try look number three.
Let's see if number three is for me.
Let's go.
All right, let's see this.
What you think, girl?
It's definitely not fitting properly,
but I would say that this is a pass,
and I would say we need to choose a shoe.
Yeah, no, we need to choose.
You don't like the two-shoe look?
Let's see how this one works out.
I have a feeling that this one's going to be it.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God, it's heavier than this one.
Can someone help me put this on?
It's your baby.
Yeah, baby.
Look at this.
I'm literally speechless.
I'm crying because I look good.
Look at this leg.
Talk about a dress with pockets, though, right?
We'll bring some snacks in.
This is the first time you'll be in pink.
Pretty in pink, B.
I've tried, and you've been like, no.
No.
But when Anna says it, I say, okay, yeah, sure.
Anna, whatever you want.
Done deal.
We're good.
We're set for the mat.
Merci, Olivier.
The funny story about the pink dress that Lisa's going to wear
is that it's more an architecture and a sculpture.
It feels like it's just like a square where you put your arm.
And even my atelier was just like, this is not a clothes.
So for this piece, we're looking at about 1,200 hours.
And there was about 12 to 14 people that worked on it.
We're looking at around 3,500 goose feathers,
about 87,000 Swarovski stones and glass cup beads.
And then we have about 37,000 beads and pearls
that have been used to thread these bead lines
that then are also crocheted together.
Granted, the nature of the piece, it actually fit her really perfectly.
We had to bring it in here a little bit to fit her shoulder a bit better.
And then afterwards, the sleeves do need to be cut down a little bit
so that she can be a bit more comfortable
and be able to hold her microphone.
It's important for my barman army to be diverse, to be strong.
And what I love about Lisa is that she doesn't follow rules.
She creates her own rules.
And I think that's why I'm really proud to dress her.
When you're working with a piece that is constructed like this,
you have to have support inside.
So there's a waist stay here, and there's a belt also here
that gives added support because the weight is so heavy.
And then there's quite a strong zipper.
Oh, last year, I think I just put the dress on in the bathroom by myself.
Wow.
And now we have three beautiful women putting on this dress.
On the runway, Balmain had a globe bag,
but I thought that this was a perfect interpretation of that.
I had shoes custom-made and recovered in Balmain fabric for Liza.
I have a variety of pearls and metals,
and white diamonds are very much the aesthetic we're going for.
We're about to collaborate and figure out what we're going to do
for my hair, makeup, and nails.
None of it's going to be mine.
It's going to be somebody else's hair.
It's going to be a different face put on my face.
It's all going to be a collaborative effort,
and it's definitely going to reflect the beauty of the dress.
I definitely got to talk to Takesha and Sam Visser to do that.
Hey, Takesha.
Hey.
So excited.
That's right.
So this is what I was thinking for the top.
Front part, flat twist, going back with messy texture coming out.
Very dramatic and grand.
Perfect for the Met Gala.
Camp.
Can we see the back of this just so you can see?
Check that back.
Wow.
Look at that.
I think that would be amazing with the dress.
Look at that.
And it's Sam Visser on the face.
He's 12 years old, right?
12.
Just turned 12.
Good.
Proud of you.
Yeah.
So my inspiration is 80s, so we have some amazing colors.
So I want to do a purple eye moment like this.
Yes.
That's beautiful.
Last year's Met Gala, this year's Met Gala.
It looks incredible.
Sam wanted my eye makeup to be horizontal as my dress is horizontal.
We're widening out everything.
I love that.
This is dope.
I look good already.
And he ain't even done.
Yeah.
Thank you, Sam.
Hi, Mommy.
Look at you.
There's a lot of people up in here.
Lots of cameras.
Thank you for having my daughter.
Dude, these nails.
Look at these nails.
I'm pretty much going to keep going until you have to leave,
so I'm going to keep adding gems until you step out the door.
TSC hair extensions.
It's 28 inches, by the way.
Yo.
Takesha.
See, trust me.
Takesha hair.
Wow.
I think I'm picking up a signal.
It's so wild how I've watched so many Vogue videos of people I idolize getting ready,
and now I'm in one, suckers.
What do you need me to get for you to be prepared to walk out the door?
I guess everything in my satchel.
I'm going to grab some lip gloss from Sam.
Okay.
Also some translucent powder from Sam.
Okay.
Also Sam.
I'm going to pee for the last time today, and then we should be good to go.
Hope you use it on the cut.
This is the final look.
I feel...
I feel empowered.
I feel so confident.
I feel beautiful.
Don't.
You just did my makeup.
I'm not about to cry.
Y'all did a wonderful job.
Look how damn good I look.
Look at this.
Look.
Show the team.
Yeah, that's right.
Yeah, we're going to blow your faces out.
Look at this.
Look at all these magicians.
I love you, dude.
I love all you guys.
This has been a real bonding experience.
Can I get one?
No one says it back.
Which way is the Met Gala?
I can't turn my head because of the pipe back there.
Can someone just hold my head up like a small baby?
They're going to try to catch me with ruffled feathers on the carpet.
Can you move my head for me?
No, no, no.
Ain't going to catch me slipping a ruffle.
My dress is very, very stiff.
And I can't sit directly upright right now.
At least not before the red carpet.
Yep, take one step.
There you go.
I did it.
I did it, suckers.
Yeah, dude.
Thank you so much for following my journey.
Do I look good?
You don't have to answer that.
I know I do.
I feel like it.
Wish me luck.
Peace.
Bye.
Yo, third Met?
You think I'm going to get hired for the third time?
Yeah?
You think so?
Yo, if I suck up enough, right?
Okay, cool.
Yo, Anna, I love you, girl.
Please, do it again.
This was really, really fun.
I think this is the one she's leaning towards.
I mean, I only...
Worried.
Good for hiding, hiding her dinner, hiding the mite.
This one's a little straightforward, I think.
Yeah, next.
Okay.
I don't care for that one as much.
Well, unless it was scaled down a bit.
I think she's overwhelmed in that.
Okay, perfect.
She's cute.
