Tonight in his US debut, he is making his first attempt at a world title.
Please welcome the IBF number three ranked world contender, introducing Akihiro Ondo.
Tonight he also is making his first attempt at a world title.
Before the fight, Liponets entered as an undefeated contender competing for the vacant IBF world
super lightweight title. Known for his compact power punching and relentless pressure style,
he saw this bout as his opportunity to capture his first world championship.
For him, the fight represented a career-defining chance to announce himself as a new force at 140
pounds.
Nice left hook to the body by Liponets.
Kondo did not catch it. He got the edge in that exchange.
He hasn't been able to convert that yet.
For future reference, punches are wide and also some blood from the nose
maybe should be somewhat more instinctive.
It's a little measured so far. Kondo trying to double up behind the jab of Liponets.
You see something often enough. You see that jab coming out. You get a sense
of when you might be able to counter.
Liponets continues to hold that left hand flow and it doesn't drop your best shot at that time.
On the inside. Second round action. Slashing shot. May have been responsible for the cut there.
Should we start round four?
With the left hook again as he backs up. You don't see him throwing too much behind the jab.
That was a good left hook by Liponets. No such thing as a wasted body shot. They always pay
dividends at some point. The power shots dissipate somewhat in round four.
As we head into round five. But he has been rushing it.
Question is can he adjust to what he's been told? Can he connect that with what he's seen?
Clubbing right by Liponets. Left hook by Kondo.
Kondo scores with a pretty good right hand here.
And tries to follow it up and there's a good left hook by Liponets.
Some mutual fireworks in round five. Good left hook by Liponets. He had some moments but were
they enough? Here was Kondo coming in. This was his best punch of the fight. Landed it in the
temple area and then he seized upon the initiative. So as we move into round six.
More effective in their last fights. He just got close enough to fire an uppercut.
Didn't even have to jab his way in. Later causes this fight to be stopped.
Inspired perhaps by the sight of the blood. Doesn't matter to a fighter. Able to hold him off.
This is how they come together. They both want positioning and they both pay the price.
That's why I like to get that position behind the jab. Get inside the jab and start working.
Second shot got through from Kondo.
Liponets looking like he wants to fire something else. That's to his advantage in terms of the
left ring. Kondo let it all hang out in that round. First shot sailed over the top.
Start to become a force. If you've done your job with that. Again Liponets
has a problem that looks serious but because of where it is in the forehead it may always
look worse than it is. Good right hand by Kondo. Treat slowly builds.
Nice jab and a right hand got in between the gloves. Later in the round after the
Crimson Mess. Kondo. Ninth round action. Collision of heads a couple rounds back.
Good jab here by Liponets. We will very soon have three rounds to go.
Leaning forward in that case of Kondo. Move laterally and then get into offensive position.
May be discouraging Kondo from getting to him but he's also taking himself out of the
offense when he does that. And round 10. Liponets into new territory here as we start round 11 and
he has not feasted on the openings presented by that low left hand by Liponets.
Throw jab and then drop a big right hand behind that. Right over that.
Defender fighter has been in real trouble. They hit the 11th bell.
We start the 12th and final round. Get inside that
tangled left hand. Mike Rodriguez did a good job actually of Liponets. A good job of making sure
Buddy McGirt telling Liponets three minutes and you are the champ so move
by Liponets. Enough to make Kondo reset Liponets. A lot of block.
Although they have limitations and they will carry that heart through to the final bell.
Frustrating night for Akihiro Kondo. All three in favor of the winner. He is now the IBF Junior
Welterweight Champion of the World, Sergey Liponets!
