I'm a French teacher and I'm evaluating the French proficiency of these celebrities
I'll give them a score out of 20 and believe me I'm extremely strict
No you know I'm the kindest one
We start right away with this actor you may have seen in the series Bridgerton
His name is Luke Thompson
He's British but I think he spent much of his childhood in France
So don't feel insecure—don't compare yourself to Luke Thompson
I’d like to clarify that I hadn’t watched the videos before filming
So you’ll see my real-time reactions and comments
Here we go
What do I miss about France
It's a bit of a cliché but wine and food
Yeah all that stuff—just the wine the food That's
the one thing I truly brought with me to England
I drink a lot of wine French
wine There's plenty of it
For me when we filmed the scene at the masquerade ball
He was alone for ten minutes and it was truly magical
Because it's not really a series—the pace is quite fast
It's one of those moments where we genuinely took our time for ten minutes just the two of us
And there was a touch of magic in the air—I loved it
Okay this is really really impressive
He has almost no accent I can tell he's
British but his accent is still excellent
He uses standard French with a touch of informal French
Did you catch the informal French word he used
I'm replaying the excerpt
What do I miss about France
It's a bit of a cliché but wine and food
So when asked what he misses most about France he replies wine
He also has excellent pronunciation of the nasal vowel 1 "vin "
And he says "bouffe" as well
The term "la bouffe " a casual French expression for food conveys a relaxed informal attitude toward eating
He's so comfortable that he can effortlessly switch between different levels of language
That means his proficiency is advanced
Well it starts strong but honestly for Luke Thompson I'm giving a 19
No a perfect 20 out of 20—frankly it's flawless
Even with a very slight accent it's charming
It doesn't affect the level of understanding
So honestly a perfect 20 out of 20 for
Luke Thompson He grew up
in the Paris region so that's to be expected Don't compare yourself to Luke Thompson
He grew up in France so it's natural he speaks French fluently
Continuing with a video of Camila Cabello the singer who
was invited onto a television set and speaks in French
I'm happy to be
here I speak a little French
I've been practicing French on Duolingo
No way using an app
I've practiced a lot of French with the app and I've been doing so extensively today for the show
Yes but thank you
I'm used to living in Miami United States
I love croissants cheese and snails
But it all makes perfect sense now—this is awesome Duolingo
And you've also sung along learning French with Stromae check it out
You saw her smile and excitement when she speaks French
That is truly priceless
Yes she makes mistakes—it's not perfect
But honestly her enthusiasm more than makes up for it
And that I love
We'll break it down a bit
together I'm happy
She says "I wipe" instead of "I am " so she doesn't pronounce the E very well
She is Spanish-speaking so that makes sense it's natural
Being here I speak a little French
She says "I've practiced " but it should be "practiced"—you can see
it in the subtitles you have to say "with Duolingo " not "to Duolingo "
A minor mistake that doesn't affect the understanding of what she's saying
I live in Miami United States
It makes me laugh because we say Miami not Miami
But she's right Miami is great
And every time she says I'm possessed
So she adds the verb être and the verb she wants to use
So you shouldn't say I am inhabited I live in Miami
and I lived in Miami if the action is over
It's the same here—no need for the verb to
be I love croissants that's all that matters
But it all makes sense now—this is awesome Duolingo
And you've also sung along learning French with Stromae check it out
Bravo Camilla your French is very good too
I'm giving you a score of 14 out of 20
I have to deduct a few points for grammar
But your enthusiasm is contagious
And that is truly precious when speaking a foreign language
You must smile and keep your heart open
Now continuing with the sublime singer Sabrina Carpenter
Okay that's not so bad She makes an effort to
construct fairly interesting sentences Does she say
"I didn't want to find the words"
Or was it that I didn't want to find love
I can't hear the words anymore
Then she talks about love so I think that's what she means
You see there's clearly a pronunciation issue with the word
since I don't understand its meaning
I have to rely on the context and what she says afterward to
understand she's talking about
love but I just hear the words
The pronunciation of the word passionately sounds a bit odd It's
as if she's saying the R sound which isn't actually in the word
I don't know why she's doing this
You hear the sound she makes with her throat which isn't necessary for this word
She always says it with an American accent Her French is good but I
think she needs to work on the
pronunciation of the letter R the R sound
Don't push too hard You shouldn't always aim for
Paris but you shouldn't always avoid it either
No we need to find the right balance and middle ground in pronunciation
So for Sabrina I'll give the note of
I'll give her a score of 13 out of 20
Yes because she didn't speak much
There were a few comprehension issues due to pronunciation problems
But that's perfectly fine
Let's continue with the magnificent Natalie Portman
who's been living in France for a while I believe
Nathalie John hello Hello
You're playing brother and sister in Fountain of Youth
How was it
Working with John is so wonderful And I feel
the brother-sister dynamic came very naturally
And you know actually I did all of John's stunts
Yes Oh incredible
Not surprisingly her French is excellent
She fully understands what the journalist is asking
It's quite a complex question that requires explanation Her
pronunciation of the R is somewhat
pronounced It's a bit too strong
How was it She said for example "work " That's
a bit too pronounced It
sounds more like "work "
I can tell the sibling dynamic
came very naturally Same
with the word "sibling " she says it quite emphatically
Maybe she could soften it a bit
I'm being a little picky
It's really just a small detail but that's what I hear
She says tut instead of toute
Tut toute
She says I did all the stunts
I did all the stunts
That's the difference between the sounds U and ou
U ou
Nathalie well done on your French
I'm giving you a score of 17 out of 20
Excellent We're going to take a little leap through time
We're going to teleport to the 1960s
I found a stunning video of Audrey Hepburn
who speaks French
You'll see it's very interesting too
I didn't realize Audrey Hepburn spoke French so well
Did you catch the little gender mistake at the end
I'll replay the clip
Mountains is a feminine noun Here it is
plural and followed by the adjective wonderful
It is masculine
Therefore it must be changed to feminine
Wonderful wonderful Her French is
truly very fluent You can tell she's
completely at ease She uses the
expression "to be expecting a child "
which means she is pregnant
She is stating a fact
The use of this expression
indicates she is quite comfortable with it
And she says that's always vacation That
should be said as And
there it's always vacation
because the mountains are so wonderful
The article is missing before the word holidays
That said his French is truly very fluent
Very pleasant to listen to and easy to understand
I give it a score of 17 out of 20

Thank you thank you for being here
for watching my videos and supporting me
Here we go for Eva Longoria's video
OK same here it's pretty good
She clearly feels comfortable
but once again there's a slight
issue with pronouncing the R
It's a bit strong For
example in the pronunciation of Marie my
husband 's
R is much softer
She used the verb apprendre in the past perfect tense
So that's very good
It's clear she has mastered the past perfect tense
But it's the pronunciation—
once again that's a bit
much I've learned it You don't
need to say the R that loudly
I
learned French with my ex -husband Tony Parker so if I
have one piece of advice for
you it's to practice the R sound
Its pronunciation can be more or less challenging
depending on its position
within the word or sentence
Did you enjoy this video
Do you think you could have scored
higher than all these celebrities
