Uh, did you see Mystic Pizza, Paul?
Uh, no. I didn't. I didn't. I heard it was fabulous.
Should we bring out Charlie now or not?
Alright, let's bring out Charlie. I'll turn on the machine.
Come on out, Charlie.
Ladies and gentlemen, it's Charlie, the bubble-eating dog.
Charlie, are you there?
Charlie!
Boy, is my face red. Turns out he's not hungry.
Alright, so we've got a room full of bubbles and no dog.
He's not hungry.
That's the punchline to an old joke, isn't it?
I think so.
Our first guest is a lovely and talented actress whose films include Mystic Pizza.
You did see this.
And she also stars in the soon-to-be-released Steel Magnolias,
in which she co-stars with Sally Field and her old friend Shirley MacLaine.
There she is, playing with Charlie.
Charlie may not let her out here.
I guess he was hungry after all.
Ladies and gentlemen, here she is, Julia Roberts.
What do you have there?
Oh, it's my pig.
Oh, no. Here, Charlie. Get off our guest, please.
He's behaving like Wendell. Alright.
Now, you have something that he's interested in there.
Well, it's my pig, Guthrie.
You want me to take your pig from you?
Well, yeah. Well, my pig actually does a little thing here.
I'll hold it, Charlie. You go ahead and turn the pig on.
Go ahead and get it, Charlie.
Okay. Alright. So, that's all.
Should we either get rid of... Oh, there goes Charlie.
Get rid of the dog or get rid of the pig.
Somebody's got to go. I don't know who.
Hi, Charlie. How are you? Nice to see you.
Do you want fries with that?
Alright. Let's see. Let me just turn on the machine once and we'll see if...
Oh, he's got the pig down here.
Maybe we better take the pig. I'm sure it'll be alright.
Somebody hold the pig.
Oh, man. It's a nightmare. It's turned into a nightmare.
Where did you get the pig? It's of some special meaning to you, huh?
I got the pig for my birthday from my friends, Stephen and Kenia.
They gave me that pig.
How old are you?
I turned 22 last Saturday.
Congratulations. 22?
Charlie apparently just had a taste for bacon.
You know, I saw you in that Mystic Pizza.
I thought that was a real nice film.
Now, was that your first sort of major motion picture?
Although I guess people described that as kind of a small film, wasn't it?
Yeah. It was small in kind of theory and budget.
Yeah. But still very entertaining.
I thought so.
How did you get the part for that?
I got the part. I went to this audition.
My hair is naturally blonde.
But now it's a little sort of auburn, isn't it?
It's a red chestnut thing.
So I went to this audition.
And there were a lot of very blonde, kind of willowy girls there as well.
And they're all reading their sides and being very kind of stupid.
Reading their sides means they're not doing this.
So they're going over the scene that they're to audition with.
And I went in and I thought, you know, if I sit here and read this,
I'm going to go in and be like every one of these girls.
So I put my Walkman on and I was listening to Jimi Hendrix at Monterey.
And I started to kind of, this feeling came over me.
I was throwing pencils into the ceiling.
And all the girls started to kind of notice and get very nervous.
And there's something about one person not looking at them.
What do they know that I don't know?
Exactly, like you're better prepared.
Something, like I have the inside track.
So I began to sing Wild Thing kind of very loudly.
And I consequently made everyone very nervous.
And went in having manifested this very bold attitude.
Read for the part, which I thought went fine.
And was then told that I was good, but physically completely wrong.
They were looking for?
They were looking for someone who looked more Portuguese.
Which I was supposed to be of Portuguese descent.
And the blonde kind of wasp thing wasn't working.
So what did you do?
I went home.
And on the way home I kept hearing in my head, physically completely wrong.
And I lived down at the South Street Seaport at that time.
And just as I got home, I lived across the street from a Lambstons.
And I went into Lambstons and I was in search of a black moose.
I was going to color my hair because I was told that although I was physically totally wrong.
I could meet the director the next day.
So in search of a black moose I found one company for like the price of 95 cents.
I got this enormous can of happiness black moose.
And I put it in my hair and it was a massive amount of moose was in my hair.
My hair was extremely curly and very black.
The only problem was that if I was to touch my hair, my hands would be black.
It comes right off, yeah.
So I went back the next day and I read for the director.
And nobody touched me which was a good thing because I didn't want anyone...
Do they usually touch you when you go in?
Is there a lot of that going on?
No, not with me.
But what ultimately happened was I was called back yet again.
To read with the gentleman that eventually played the part of Charlie Adam Stork.
A really great guy who we had this scene which is a very kind of touching scene.
He spent the entire scene kind of saying Daisy, Daisy.
Running his hands through my hair and they were black when it was over.
Muck, yeah.
But we both got the part and I went home in the rain and ruined my favorite blouse.
Did you shoot the whole movie was done in and around Mystic?
Is that right?
Yeah.
That's a nice little area isn't it?
Yeah, it's nice.
Did you go to Stonington?
We filmed in Stonington.
We did.
That's cute isn't it?
It's a perfect place to go for the weekend with your mom.
Yeah.
And we were there for almost three months.
Did you invite mom up?
I did actually.
She came for my birthday.
My birthday fell while we were doing Mr. Pizza.
That's great.
But that was a year ago.
You were 21 then I guess.
Yeah.
Things are going pretty well.
Now as we get ready to do the commercial I'm turning on the machine again.
Bring out the dog.
Charlie.
There's bubbles out here Charlie.
We'll be right back folks.
There's Charlie.
Michelle Schacht and Tom Baudet.
Now the pig, is there a special significance to the pig for you?
Well it just kind of represents the birthday that I spent in Chicago with all my friends.
That's Guthrie.
I've seen plenty of Guthrie.
And Paul has it there with the lovely Debbie Gibson cologne.
Would you like me to scent the pig a little bit?
It's up to you.
Have you tried it yet by the way?
I'm sorry?
Have you tried?
Have you tried the Debbie Gibson cologne?
I haven't actually.
I didn't know it existed.
Would you like to?
It's a...
You get a basket of parting gifts and that's included in it.
There's Charlie.
He's after the watch the pig.
Spread it on the Paul's point.
Okay.
Thank you very much.
How about a little for Charlie Paul?
Very strange night here.
Yeah I know.
We smelled this last night.
It's a little...
It's kind of fruity.
Yeah a little fruity.
Why hello Charles.
So tell me about this Steel Magnolias.
Now this is going to be like another significant film?
A significant film.
Well because of the cast and everybody in there?
Who all is in there?
You?
Sally Fields.
Shirley MacLaine.
Olympia Dukakis.
So this is a pretty good group huh?
Dolly Parton.
Yeah.
And my friend Daryl Hannah who's here.
She's hiding in the back.
Daryl Hannah is here?
Yeah.
Is she really here?
She's also in the film?
Yes she is.
Would she want to come out and say hello or not?
Probably not.
That's rude to ask isn't it?
When a guy in the audience screams out get her out here.
If she was wavering that's going to push her right over the edge.
Stay in the back Daryl.
Stay in the back.
Wait Daryl.
Stay.
There she is hiding.
And I don't blame her.
Baby face.
So what was that like all of you?
Where did they shoot this film Steel Magnolias?
Natchitoches Louisiana.
I'm sorry again.
She's leaving.
Don't leave Daryl.
Where's she going?
It's a magic night here on Dave's Broadway Cavalcade.
Hi.
How are you?
Nice to see you.
What are you doing in town?
Visiting with your friend?
Well actually we're doing a press junket.
About Steel Magnolias?
Yeah.
Did you enjoy the experience?
Yeah.
We had a great time.
How long were you in this town in Louisiana?
We were down there for about four months.
Oof.
Yeah.
And was it hard to stay there?
Stay in one place for four months?
I kind of liked it.
I liked it.
What did you do for recreation there?
We went horseback riding and I fainted in your yard.
Remember that?
It was really hot.
It was like 106 degrees.
Yeah.
100% humidity.
We go horseback riding.
We're walking back to the house.
We're kind of just strolling.
Right.
I said, Daryl, I feel a little boom.
And I just hit the ground.
She sprung into action.
She like, you know, cold cloth and the whole thing.
I still breathe, breathe.
Well time flies when you're unconscious.
Now how did you people get along together?
You and what's her name?
Shirley MacLaine.
Did she strike you as being goofy, either one of you?
I think Shirley's tremendous.
Really?
Yeah.
She was my next door neighbor in Natchitoches.
Oh, yeah.
But did she do stuff?
Were there seances?
No, she's wonderful.
Really?
She's really, really wonderful.
Her theories are a lot more grounded than they seem to be.
Right.
And she was nice?
Everybody get along all right?
Oh, yeah.
There were no hair-pulling catfights?
Nope.
It was great.
We got together and played games.
We went over to Herbert's house one night and played.
Herbert being?
Herbert Ross, the director.
The director, yeah.
On the 4th of July, we went over and we had dinner and fireworks and the whole thing.
And we played this game called Sardines.
Yeah.
In which Herbert turned off all the lights in the house and hid somewhere.
And we were all supposed to...
Yeah.
We were all supposed to independently...
Hello.
Al Mar.
He's so serious.
Yes.
We were...
He's so serious.
Al has a version of this game he plays here in the studio.
We were all supposed to go independently and find Herbert.
And wherever he were, like if he was in a closet,
then one person gets in and then you all get packed into a closet like sardines.
That's just the game.
But we were all too scared.
Once the lights went out, we were all holding hands and running around and hiding
and screaming like a bunch of children.
Ninnies.
Sure.
A bunch of ninnies, yeah.
And do you think the film turned out well?
Have you seen it?
Are you happy with it?
Yeah, it's turned out great.
Alright.
And it's released soon.
November 17th.
Alright.
Tell you what, we have to do a station identification and then we'll be right back.
I'm sure Debbie Gibson, God bless her, is a wonderful woman.
Yeah.
But this stuff smells like some kind of de-lousing preparation.
I don't know about that.
And the longer one is wearing it, it seems like the more aromatic it gets.
It does.
Now, is this a scent you would wear?
Ha!
Well, I guess if I were going out with Paul, since he...
I would be thrilled.
Coming up in this half hour, the program Michelle Shock.
Do you know her?
Are you familiar with her work?
I think she's wonderful.
Very good.
Yeah, she's here.
She's terrific.
Also, Tom Beaudet will be with us tonight.
Tomorrow...
Saturday and Sunday.
And, of course, we're not on Saturday and Sunday because of NBC's extended coverage of the Olympics.
Really, really extended coverage.
How long has that been going on?
Monday, Monday, Monday on the program.
Jay Leno will be here.
Ruth Stone will be here.
And Tama Janowitz.
That will be Monday on the big production.
And tonight, if you're just joining us, we have Charlie the dog with us.
And later, we'll turn on the machine.
Mind if I have that?
Thank you very much.
This is the lovely Julia Roberts, by the way.
You know, I enjoyed that mystic pizza.
Oh, I'm glad.
Yeah, I thought it was keen.
I enjoyed it.
Had a nice time.
Did you ever go to Nowank and eat clams?
Do you like clams?
Did I ever go where?
Go to Nowank and eat clams?
Nowank and eat clams?
Yeah.
Yeah, that's what I said.
Nowank.
N-O-A-N-K.
I've never eaten a clam.
I have to be honest.
Hey, Al, get her some clams.
Boil up some steamers and get them out here.
He's serious.
Yeah, don't, don't.
That's one rule of life.
If Al Mar ever offers you a clam.
Or I think shellfish generally.
Any kind of bivalve, stay away.
Yeah, any kind of bivalve.
Don't let Al Mar.
Don't let Al Mar do that.
Here we go.
Tonight's top ten category list.
