Join us for the AGT clips where Jason is joined by James Morosini who reveals how his film I Love My Dad was inspired by the craziest true story...
The thing is, he made a movie called I Love You, Dad.
I Love My Dad.
We saw it, I don't know, maybe it was like one of the first movies Naveen and I saw together
as a couple.
It's such a good movie.
You wrote, you directed it.
It won the Sundance Jury Award.
South by.
What's that?
South by.
Sorry, South by.
It won the South by Grand Jury and Audience Award.
And what's the difference between the Grand Jury and the Audience?
So Grand Jury, there are like five people that decide upon their favorite movie.
Just five?
Five.
I think it's like five.
Who are the five?
I don't know.
I guess they're very smart, special people.
Wow.
And they love me now.
Amazing.
I don't know.
And then the audience is like all of the, everybody in the audience votes.
Ah, online.
Yeah.
And then the five, that's the jury.
Yeah.
I wonder who's on the five.
Like, is it, do you know?
I think I know one of them.
I don't know.
It's like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Tyler Perry.
Yeah.
Tyler Perry.
The Shadow Council.
The what?
The Shadow Council.
Yeah.
That's what they are.
Oh, the Shadow Council.
And so, so anyways, Brandon, this movie is like, it's-
I saw it.
Oh, you saw it?
I watched it last night.
Oh, you watched it?
Brandon Prepped!
Yeah.
I watched it last night.
I was told we were going to have a filmmaker here and this, to my knowledge, this is your
first feature?
It's my third.
Third.
Okay.
Yeah, but it's my first with a proper budget and whatnot.
Right.
The first two I made for like 10 to 15 grand each.
Right, yeah.
And those were like full features?
Those were full features, yeah.
Okay, so with this one, my main question is like, how did all this come together?
How did all that, like where, because I was reading, I read that this idea of yours, this
whole idea for the movie, which is basically, I don't want to butcher it or anything, but
it's like a dad who wants to get in contact with his son.
His son doesn't want anything to do with him.
The dad then kind of creates a profile of a real person that exists, but he pretends
to be this person in order to talk to his son.
It's a girl.
It's a very pretty girl.
Catfishes.
Catfishes, his own son.
And the dad is Patton Oswalt, who's amazing in it.
Yeah.
So that idea, I was researching that that is what happened to you.
Yeah.
That actually happened to you.
Yeah, so basically a long time ago, my dad and I, we got in a big fight and I blocked
him on social media.
And I was really depressed at the time and he was worried about me.
And I got home one day and this really pretty girl had sent me a friend request online.
I was thrilled.
This girl looks amazing.
And then she had all these amazing pictures and all the same interests as me and everything.
And then I found out that it was my dad.
How did you find that out?
The email address that he used was the same email address that he has.
He almost got it, right?
Yeah, which was the cure one at rcn.com.
Big alternative rock fan?
Yeah, I was like, man, that's so cool.
She and my dad are going to get along so well.
This is great.
She likes the cure.
My dad likes the cure.
And then I remember this feeling of absolute dread washing over my body.
And then it was followed by kind of this weird elation of like, this is such a good bit.
I can't wait to share this with people.
Also this kind of frustration of like, I don't know how I'm ever going to convey the weirdness
of this.
That it's such a sweet thing for him to do to make sure I'm okay.
It comes through in the movie.
That's why you really love Patton's character, because you're just like, oh, he's trying.
I know.
Thinking about who was going to play that part was tricky.
He was very in mind from the beginning, but if it's the wrong casting, you end up just
hating him.
Yes.
You're like, this guy's just a jerk.
Why is he doing this to me?
Well, I'm a dad, so I related to that.
I felt like you could have cast anyone, because at the root of it, it's like, he wants to
have a relationship with his son.
I've had issues with my dad, wanted to be closer with my dad, so I related to it.
And then Lil Rel Howery is in it, right?
Yeah, Lil Rel.
Unreal.
He's great in it.
So funny.
He's a trip.
I mean, you can kind of just put a camera on him and let him riff, and he'll just be
hilarious.
Right.
He's funny in everything.
And Rachel Dratch.
She's great in it, too.
Great.
Yeah.
