BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL DJ!!
On today's vlog, I take my assistant Jess to work a day at Jonah's Kebab as her punishment for being late after Coachella weekend. Watch as Suzy teaches her the grill and how to put on a hairnet. Plus, David and I take a DJ Class with DJ Happa and learn the ins and out of the ones and twos.
go check out DJ Hapa on IG and Youtube here. He's an amazing instructor! @DJHapa
What do we have here?
Not only is she late, she's sick.
I'm okay.
In the case of Jessica here versus the people, I have ruined Jessica here guilty.
Welcome to the vlog. Get out of the way.
Jesus Christ.
What's up guys? How are you?
We've got a shelter going on here in the house.
This is our new dog shelter.
We found this one on the 405.
Okay, here's the poll.
Clearly I'm not fired because I'm hearing now.
Here is the poll that we did for Jess after she was late.
Four hours late and took Thursday and Friday off.
Should Jess keep her job?
And the answer was
8,246 people said yes, you should keep your job.
5,648 said no.
That's a lot of people that don't like me.
I know, but I did get you a video.
Yeah, that's true.
The top comments for what my punishment should be
A big one was have me work at Jonah's for a day.
You're working today?
Yeah.
My assistant was late the other day and the punishment,
the commenters think that she should go work at Jonah's Kebab for the day.
I 100% agree with you.
She needs to take my job.
I'm so tired of working.
We're here.
Jonah's Kebab, right on Oxnard in North Hollywood.
Susie!
What's up? It's Jason.
We know who it is.
We haven't been friends for seven years.
It's like when he calls people and he's like,
Hey, it's Jason.
I have your number.
I do want to know before we get the ball rolling.
Why were you four hours late?
I came from Coachella and we got stuck in traffic.
We were stuck in traffic.
From Coachella?
You had to work on Monday?
11 we start.
We even start really late.
She still stood up at 2.30 and we took a vote.
Where'd you take a vote at?
On my Instagram.
Did you block me from your Instagram story?
Oh yeah, I forgot. I blocked you.
You have to pass the interview though.
She wouldn't last five minutes here.
I need to give you an apron.
Do this.
Jason's going to fire her.
She wants to know if I'm frizzy on the job.
Okay, thank you.
I will do that.
You were right, Jess.
Do I look good in this hairnet?
Yeah, you look good.
Have you ever grilled before?
Yeah, once.
Joe's video.
You've never grilled in your life?
She has a clothing business.
Well, this is a little different.
Ready to go.
How long does it take?
The chicken part takes a little bit longer than the chicken.
Thank you.
Oh ----!
The grill!
She's late!
You were late on the chicken!
I'm sorry.
Late's my middle name.
You're going to want fries, right?
I'm going to say no because I'm scared of the hot oil.
Can you make the fries?
Jake, where did you hire this woman?
She's afraid of everything.
I don't like the oil.
Those look good.
Where'd she go?
I'm here.
How long do you put it in for?
That's what she said.
Maybe four or five minutes.
Thank God you're here.
Jess, look at you!
Where do I put it?
I'm impressed.
Perfect!
It's a tight operation.
How can I get you?
May I please have the combo number two?
Great choice.
What's in it?
Can you not read?
That will be $15.32.
Would you like to tip?
Sure.
Do you know where the order is?
Yeah, I do.
There's a little receipt right there.
One chicken kebab wrap combo.
You got it.
Whoa!
Look at this.
Tight, tight, tight.
She's getting it.
Perfect.
Would you like any sauce on your order?
I'll have a little on the side.
Actually, dump it, dump it, dump it.
Whoa!
You did a really great job.
One thing that you need to...
Maybe it's the fear that you have.
You were definitely very scared of the fryer
and touching the meat on top.
But that's okay.
First time.
But you were great at customer service.
Although I did think it was a little funny
when you just looked at it dead in the face
and said, would you like to leave a tip?
I got 20%.
Can you come by this time tomorrow?
What time is it?
11am?
Yeah, I'll be there at 3.
Guys, this is Happa.
He's a world-class DJ coach.
Where can we find you?
DJ Happa.
This, my friends, is a special USB drive.
Oh, that's sick.
I just plug that into myself
and I...
So when you plug this in,
it'll basically read the music
and you won't need a laptop.
I saw on TikTok that Pharrell starts all his songs
with four beats.
Each one of these is a beat.
And then each one of these,
that's a bar, that's a bar.
This is all a phrase.
And then the whole thing is a phrase.
So when I look at the intro of Wonderwall,
I'll count this for you.
So this is 1, 2, 3, 4.
It's one phrase.
1, 2, 3, 4, 2.
You see that things happen
and change on the phrase.
3, 4, 4, 2, 3, 4.
So technically,
that intro of Wonderwall
is two phrases long
or eight bars in length.
So when we're playing two songs,
in this case, we're going to play Taki Taki
and we're going to bring in Wonderwall.
As Taki Taki is playing,
at some point in time,
I'm going to start the intro of Wonderwall.
It's going to play underneath the Taki Taki
for eight bars.
So I'm looking for an eight-bar section.
Every time?
Not necessarily every time,
but this is the most standard mix.
So now they're playing together.
I've got eight bars.
I'm going to start to bring this in.
So it wasn't...
There was a real strategy
of when I change the song.
It wasn't just at a random time.
By doing that
and by knowing the songs,
this is the part of the magic
is figuring out the songs
that people don't get a chance to see.
It's so funny because for years,
me and all my friends have made jokes
like, yeah, the DJ just hits a button
and it's not that way at all.
How many sessions will it take me
to be able to DJ a small gathering?
You have a birthday coming up, don't you?
Yeah, in July.
You want to DJ for your birthday?
Yeah, I want to DJ for my birthday.
How many hours do I have to put in?
I'd probably say
we need at least ten sessions
to get to a point where you feel
good about it.
I would say you'd feel comfortable
doing a half hour to 45 minutes.
That's so cool.
Damn.
We have a friend that does it
on a pretty high level
and I don't actually know what he does up there.
A good DJ is like a good magician.
There's a setup that happens
so you see the aha moment
in the audience as a magician
if you're at a magic show.
The magician has already set this up.
He already touched your shoulder two minutes ago
and he already set that up.
He's like the Karate Kid.
First, I've got to learn how to wash my car.
Lights on, lights off.
I met my wife through DJing.
Willie beat his wife.
Master volume is down.
There you go.
Wow, David,
you're good, man.
He goes, what the f*** did you just do?
That was insane.
This is all I know.
I'm such an annoying DJ.
Who wants it slower?
Hit this button one more time.
Now that says quiet.
Now try it.
Oh, s***.
Okay, yeah.
This could be a cool way to transition.
You told me
that you don't have rhythm
which you just right now changed it
on the one of the phrase.
I do know when the beat drops.
There you go.
That's rhythm.
If I were bringing in a song.
Ooh.
Let Dave do it.
You do it, Dave.
Yeah.
Don't forget you have archery at five.
I'm just learning different hobbies.
I'm going to show you something else
just to have some fun with this here.
We're going to use something called the slip loop.
The track is still running.
Okay, so it bounces back
and keeps going.
Let's do it.
You got it?
Yes.
Eight, two, three, four.
We're out.
What?
Yes.
What's up?
