Hi, welcome to Dixie's Storytime World. Have you ever felt fear and wondered why?
Come along as fear teaches you how to identify fear in your body, to find out if there is danger
and how to find safe. The Fear Inside from the best-selling author of The Anger Inside,
Michelle Clayton. You woke me up. My name is Fear Emotion. What's your name? It's wonderful
to meet you. I was just sleeping, which is my favorite thing to do. I'm glad you're here
because most kids don't like me. I'm here to help you and let you know when something is not okay.
Having fear does not mean anything is wrong with you or that you are bad. I am a normal human
emotion that everyone has. I am the alarm system for your body. When I get woken up,
I bring big energy and I take over your whole body. I help keep you safe by showing you there
might be danger. I help protect you. I'm a big voice in your body yelling something is not okay.
Have you ever felt afraid? Do you know what fear feels like in your body? Has your stomach
felt like it dropped in your body? Have you ever felt your heart beat in your head, face,
ears? Have you ever wanted to curl up in a ball and hide? Have you ever gotten goosebumps
on your neck, legs, or arms? Have you ever felt like you couldn't move and were frozen like a
statue? Have you ever wanted to run and hide? Has your heartbeat felt like it was bigger than
your chest? That's me. That means you have fear awake in your body. It's completely okay to be
afraid sometimes. There are two different reasons why fear shows up. One, if there's real danger.
Two, when the what-if emotion pops up. The what-if emotion pops up when you are worried or
nervous. There is no danger around you to make you unsafe. Fear shows up when there's real danger
and you need to listen. Danger is when you can get seriously hurt. Crossing the street without a
grown-up is dangerous. Putting your hand on a hot stove is dangerous. Climbing up high where you can
fall is dangerous. I need you to talk to a trusted grown-up about what is dangerous in your world.
There are three things that fear can help you do, but don't worry. Your body will pick one of these
things for you. One, run and scream. Two, freeze like a statue. And three, fight back with anger.
I give you the help you need to make sure you're okay, even though it's not fun to feel afraid.
I'm supposed to be there. I am important for everyone. I'm here for a reason. Now kids,
get a paper and draw a picture showing a time when you felt afraid. Did you know I have a twin?
My twin's name is Safe Emotion. Safe is what you want to feel most of the time.
I'm Safe Emotion. Feeling safe in your body is really important. You can learn to find safe
anytime there is no danger. You'll know my twin's safe is in your body when you don't feel tight
and your breathing and heartbeat are quiet and steady. Safe hides when fear comes out.
Safe and fear can't hang out in your body at the same time. It's only fear or safe. You can never
feel both at the same time. Safe is out when you can focus on things like learning at school,
drawing, playing, and having fun. You know safe is out when you can be peaceful, happy,
and can enjoy where you are. Once you are not in danger, you will need the help of a
trusted grown-up to help me fall asleep and to help you find safe again. Can you see everything
around you? Can you see big, medium, and tiny things? Safe is out when you can look around
and be curious. As fear falls asleep, it can look like crying, shaking, curling up in a ball,
and rocking. All of those things are completely okay. Anything you feel is okay when your body
is talking to you. It's important to listen. Sometimes things will feel funny, but know
there is nothing wrong. Find your feet. Can you find your feet? What are your feet touching?
What is your body touching? Are you standing, sitting, or laying? What do you feel touching you?
You will need help to move all the big energy out of your body.
You can feel hard things and be okay. It is super important to find safe so fear can rest.
I really like to sleep. Getting a big hug from a trusted grown-up can help. When you are ready,
take a deep breath and follow below. What are five things you can see? Look around.
Name four things you can touch. What are three things you can hear? Are there two things you
can smell? Name one thing you can taste. Safe is soft and warm. Safe feels like you can relax and
breathe. Safe feels gentle and cozy. What does safe feel like in your body? Once fear is asleep,
safe can come out. Okay, I'm getting sleepy. I only like waking up when you really need me.
I'm so tired. It's safe's turn. I'll wake up if you need me. Good night. Good night fear. Safe is
here. Thank you kids for listening and learning. Now come and meet all my friends at the website
which is listed below and if you also want to buy a copy of this book, the link is available
in the description at the bottom of this video. Remember, always be good, polite, and kind.
