Hello and welcome to Dixie's Storytime World.
With dreams of cosmic adventures and a longing to find his missing father,
a young astronaut and a mysterious space creature journey beyond the stars to discover
there are many ways to be strong, smart and courageous.
Let's read along together Beyond the Stars written by Matthew Berto.

The young astronaut floated alone through the vast and empty galaxy.
Ever since he could remember, he had always wanted to be an astronaut.
It called to him.
He liked the mystery the cosmos held at night and he always wondered what was beyond the stars.
But now that he was floating through space all by himself,
he realized it was cold and dark and nothing at all like he had dreamed of.
He was feeling very alone and very scared and thought he might never make it back home when
a small, bright creature appeared from nowhere and made its way towards him.
Hello, young astronaut, greeted the creature in a high-pitched voice.
Hello, replied the boy.
Where did you come from?
Why are you floating here by yourself?
asked the little creature, ignoring the boy's question.
I am actually looking for my father, but I got lost and so now I am trying to get back home.
Why do you think your father is out here?
This is where they said he went, replied the boy.
I know he is out here somewhere.
The small creature thought for a moment then said,
I think I know where he is.
Really?
the boy said excitedly.
Can you show me?
Of course, said the creature.
But on this voyage you will find things you are not expecting
and other truths you already know deep down.
Are you ready?
The boy nodded confidently and replied,
I am ready.
So with that, the two new friends began their journey to the stars and beyond.
And although the young astronaut was excited,
he was still missing home and scared for what he may find
as they travelled further out to space.
Where are you taking me?
asked the young astronaut.
Tell me more about your father, said the creature,
ignoring the boy's question once again.
He was a true adventure, replied the boy.
He was strong and smart and courageous.
Unlike me, I can do nothing right.
I haven't seen my father for a long time and I just want him to come home.
On their journey, the boy and the creature
passed the many moons of Jupiter and through the rings of Saturn.
They dodged asteroids and chased comets.
They spent many days exploring nebulas, quasars and black holes.
They travelled to unknown planets where they met amazing aliens
and monsters of all shapes and sizes.
And over the long journey, the young astronaut grew to be strong
and smart and courageous.
Space was now everything he had ever dreamed of.
And it had been such an exciting adventure
that he had almost forgotten the reason he had come out this far in the first place.
Until his little space friend reminded him one day.
I think it's time to go home, young astronaut, said the creature.
But I haven't found my father yet, replied the boy.
You said he was out here.
I said I would show him to you.
Then where is he?
The boy demanded.
He is with you now.
He has always been with you.
The boy did not understand.
Don't you see?
You are strong and smart and courageous.
You have become your father.
I guess that was the thing I wasn't expecting.
Correct, replied the creature.
And the truth you already know deep down.
The boy thought for a moment and sighed.
That I need to accept my father is gone forever.
He is not gone forever, the creature said.
He lives in you.
You carry his spirit.
And as long as you remember that, he will live on forever.
The boy sighed again.
But I miss him a lot.
Of course you do.
And I know he misses you as well.
How do you know, asked the boy.
The little space creature smiled and ignored the young astronaut's question once more.
I think it's time to go home, it said.
And in a blink of an eye, it was gone.
Leaving the young astronaut floating in space by himself once again.
But this time, he wasn't scared or lost or alone.
This time, the young astronaut knew he was being guided home.
So with a deep breath, he began a new journey towards the pale blue dot
far away in the distant sky, far beyond the stars.
