GM s Future With Hybrids Mary Barra
Feb 14, 2026 #Marybarra
We are evaluating plug-in hybrids.
We have plans to do some, as we've announced in the past.
And the other thing, that's a really great question when you look at
what will the regulatory environment be beyond 28.
In the past, plug-ins were the only hybrids that actually counted toward the regulatory perspective.
So we have plans to do those, and we'll have hybrids where we think we need to.
But again, we're mainly investing and continuing to work on EBs because we think that's the end game.
And we want to be prudent with our owner's capital.
You said hybrids. Do you mean traditional hybrids?
Well, we're continuing to evaluate both, watch what that market has.
But you probably remember a decade ago, or not even a decade ago, hybrids went up,
and then almost as fast as share grew, share went down.
And what we also know today with plug-in hybrids is most people don't plug them in.
So that's why we're trying to be very thoughtful about what we do from a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid perspective.
If you could go back, do you wish you had the traditional hybrid offering right now?
No. I mean, I think as I go back and look, with everything we knew at that point in time,
we'd make the same decision.
Because again, we have to be very thoughtful with our capital and how we deploy it.
And I still think it's the end game.
One of the statistics we see is once someone buys an EV, they're 80% likely they're going to buy another EV.
So I think that's why we look at where we're going to head, and we've got to have great vehicles on both sides.
And frankly, a lot of our internal combustion engine vehicles are more efficient than a hybrid.
So we're going to continue on that path.
