Journalist Don Lemon has pleaded not guilty on charges of conspiracy and interfering with the First Amendment rights of worshippers stemming from an anti-ICE protest at a Minnesota church.

Lemon, a former CNN anchor, entered his plea in federal court in St. Paul on Friday.

The independent journalist on Jan. 18 livestreamed the demonstration against President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration inside the Cities Church in St. Paul. A group that had organized the protest reportedly believed that the pastor was working as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.

Lemon was indicted by a federal grand jury and was taken into custody in Los Angeles, where he had been covering the Grammy Awards.

He maintained he went to the church to cover the demonstration after receiving a tip about it, but was unaware that protesters would disrupt an ongoing service.
