The Capriccio espagnol is a masterpiece of orchestration, overflowing with exquisitely beautiful melodic themes. Each melodic line is assigned to a specific group of instruments. This work is a study in orchestration, with no more descriptive intention than Scheherazade, where the titles of the movements refer to no precise scene, but instead evoke a mythical Orient full of noise, fury, and sensuality.

Originally conceived as a work for violin and orchestra, the Capriccio espagnol was begun in 1887, at a time when Rimsky-Korsakov sought distraction from completing, together with Glazunov, Borodin’s Prince Igor. Within the five movements of this orchestral suite (Alborada, Variations, Alborada, Scene and Gypsy Song, Fandango asturiano), he drew on Spanish themes taken from José Inzenga’s collection Ecos de España, colección de cantos y bailes populares. At its Paris premiere at the Russian Concerts in 1889, the work was described by one critic as “an absolutely delirious display of sonic arrogance”!

A severe critic of his own creations, Rimsky-Korsakov defined the Capriccio as a piece “lively and brilliant, but superficial.” That latter quality may indeed be undeniable, yet for the vivacity and brilliance of its colors, the score of the Capriccio espagnol has few rivals. If the music does not always appeal—sometimes for valid reasons of balance between poetic inspiration and technical display—its success remains indisputable.
