Julia Roberts Calms Down By Playing Mahjong

Our first guest tonight is an Oscar-winning actress and one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Her new film is Ben is Back. Relax, I'm not going to be looking at your privates. Okay then. I will be keeping my eyes on you, just like I said. This is so not cool. Nothing about this is cool, Ben. Come on, pee-pee time. Shut up. Do you want me to turn the faucet on? Shut up. All right, all right. Sometimes that helps. Please welcome Julia Roberts. Happy to see you. Oh, thank you. Happy to see you. Thank you. I'm so happy to see you. I've never had a chance to interview you before. No. Yeah, though this is friendly confines for you. I think you were on with Dave for like 25 times or something like that. Oh, yeah, I mean. Somebody counted. It's, well, maybe that's why I'm crying. Because I can feel the spirit of all those sweet conversations and all that smooching we did. Let's keep this professional. I love your dress. That's so beautiful. It's my yuletide cheer. Yeah, you were wearing something different when I came backstage to say hi earlier, but you also looked great in that outfit. Well, thank you kindly. How often do you change a day? My clothes? Yes, your clothes. Not my mood. No. That could be several. On a press day, well, today I've changed my clothes a number of times, but normally I just get dressed the once. You get it right first thing in the morning? Or wrong, but I stick with it. All right, good. Good for you. That's good for you. Stick your guns. Now, you're, as I was saying before, you're one of the biggest movie stars in the world, and you seem like perfectly relaxed and approachable. Maybe that's why you're one of the biggest movie stars in the world, is that you seem like very sort of laid back and easygoing. How do you stay relaxed? Well, I don't, in day-to-day life, nobody really talks about movie star-ness. Really? I think that's relaxing. No one's saying like, hey, good morning, want a cup of coffee? You're a huge movie star, by the way. But certainly when you're out in the public, people must go, look, that's Julia Roberts. People say hello. People are super friendly, but it's calm energy that comes to me, which is nice and lovely. Where in America are you finding calm energy right now? Take me with you. No, just the energy that comes to me. Toward you, yeah. Do you have any hobbies? Do you have any things that you do to relax you? I do. Well, I play Mahjong with my girlfriends once a week. That's probably my... That many people play Mahjong in this audience? That would make me so super happy right now. How do you play Mahjong? And you don't have to give me all the rules, but... Oh, I could not. I grew up with a set of my grandmothers in the house. You did? Yeah, beautiful. Bamboo with like the ivory front, really old, like 100 years old. They look beautiful. I can't imagine how you play. It looks so complicated. I can't make heads or tails of it. No. No, what's the point? It is... Well, here's the point. And my team here, my people, can back me up on this. The concept of it is to create order out of chaos based on random drawing of tiles. Wow. That's deep. That is deep. That is. It's sort of like life. It's sort of like every day we try to make a little bit of order out of the chaos of life, just with our random acts of hopefully wisdom and kindness. And do you proselytize? Do you try to get other people to play Mahjong? Oh, yes. Oh, really? Because I was taught by my girlfriend, Elizabeth. And now I have... There's eight of us that play on Tuesdays. You play for cash? Is this for green? You know, we don't bet. And a lot of people say I'm missing the point by not betting. But it's just sort of... It's a friendly game. It's about food and we catch up and we play Mahjong and it's just a great joy. Is it a cocktail or anything like that? Cocktails. Mahjong is not a drinking game. It's not a drinking game. Every game is a drinking game if you start drinking. We have to take a little bit of a break. Please don't go anywhere.
