לדברי עספורה ייתכן שישיב את הקשרים הדיפלומטיים עם טייוואן, וינתק את היחסים עם בייג'ינג. בשנת 2023, ניתקה הונדורס את יחסיה עם טייוואן, שנמשכו 82 שנה, ובמקום זאת הכירה בסין הקומוניסטית.
החלטה זו פגעה קשות בין היתר בתעשיית השרימפס של הונדורס, משום שקונים מסין לא הצליחו לפצות על כ-40% מהיצוא שבעבר נרכש על ידי טייוואן, למרות הבטחות שיעמדו ביעד. עקב כך כ-60% מחוות השרימפס בהונדורס נסגרו, ועשרות אלפי עובדים נותרו ללא תעסוקה.
נוכח הלחץ שמפעיל המשטר היושב בבייג'ינג על ממשלות העולם, מאז שנת 2000, 21 מדינות העבירו את קשריהן הדיפלומטיים מטייוואן לסין.
כיום, נותרו בעולם רק 12 מדינות המקיימות יחסים דיפלומטיים מלאים עם טייוואן.
יצויין שעספורה, הגיע לאחרונה לביקור בישראל, עוד לפני השבעתו הרשמית לנשיא המדינה, ואותת על קו מדיני פרו-אמריקני ופרו-ישראלי ברור.

The new president of Honduras says he's considering switching the country's diplomatic ties from
China back to Taiwan.
President Nasr al-Azhar spoke on the issue following a meeting with President Trump.
NTD's Joy Chu has the story from Taiwan.
President Trump met with Honduran President Nasr al-Azhar in Mar-a-Lago on Saturday.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the two leaders share America's first values and
maintain a close partnership on security issues.
Following the meeting, al-Azhar said he may restore diplomatic ties with Taiwan and cut
relations with Beijing.
In 2023, Honduras dropped its 82-year relationship with Taiwan and recognized China instead.
That decision hit the shrimp industry hard, after Chinese buyers failed to make up for
the roughly 40 percent of exports once bought by Taiwan, despite earlier promises.
About 60 percent of shrimp farms shut down, leaving tens of thousands out of work.
As Beijing ramps up pressure on governments to pick sides, 21 countries have switched
diplomatic ties from Taiwan to China since 2000.
Today, Taiwan is left with just 12 diplomatic allies worldwide.
