When Joinery Becomes Design | A Different Way to Use the Festool Domino
In this video, we look at the Festool Domino from a different perspective.
For most woodworkers, the Domino is a tool for speed, precision, and hidden joints. It’s efficient, reliable, and predictable — cut the mortise, insert the tenon, and move on.
But what if the tenon didn’t have to stay hidden?
Using a coffee table as an example, I explore two familiar approaches: traditional hidden Domino joints and exposed tenons that become part of the design. Once the joint is visible, it starts to define the character of the piece. The structure is no longer concealed — it’s honest, intentional, and expressive.
Exposed joinery shifts the focus from pure strength to proportion, rhythm, light, and shadow. Every detail matters, because everything is on display. Thanks to the precision of the Festool Domino, these joints remain strong and durable while adding visual interest and individuality.
This isn’t about tricks or shortcuts. It’s a calm exploration of possibilities that often go unnoticed, and a reminder that even a familiar tool can reveal an entirely new side when used with a different mindset.
