However harvesting these rice fruits is somewhat difficult because they grow on steep slopes
But for me learning self-sufficiency skills is also a way to sharpen my thinking
A way of thinking that has helped me and my entire family become more independent and resilient over time—teaching economics
I realize that each of us is facing and will continue to face
countless crises—both around the world and right here at home
You don't necessarily have to change the world but you can
change yourself Saving money is not just a short-term solution
but could also serve as a long-term strategy for survival
Hello everyone and welcome back to my little house in the woods
August had just ended in stifling heat and September arrived as a warm extension of summer
Shorter days more rain
the desperate calls of male deer echoing through the forest at night
and the landscape is brimming with fruit and various berries ready to be picked
Thus naturally speaking this is an important time
of year if you want to become more self-sufficient
Now is the time to harvest and store food so it can be used throughout the winter
I believe that growing and preparing your
own food not only leads to a healthier diet
and also helps you save money when you need to manage your budget
This is especially true for me right now
particularly after my car broke down last month
And I had to spend a large amount of money on repairs
Not to mention I still have several expensive home
projects coming up so I need to save throughout this winter
Regardless of anything else I believe the ability
to save money is a vital life skill in today's world
Since we appear to be living through a period of crisis everything
has become more unpredictable and significantly more expensive
Global climate conditions are making food production more
difficult while the war in Ukraine has caused energy shortages
and global inflation pushed prices up everywhere affecting everyone
Thus saving money is not just a short-term solution
but could also serve as a long-term strategy for survival
So I went back into the dense undergrowth once more this time in search of the crispy rice cake
My plan is to make some delicious crispy rice juice for winter
This is truly a tasty and healthy drink
Packed with vitamin C something you can
enjoy during winter so I always prioritize making it
However picking these crispy
rice fruits is a bit
difficult because they grow on steep slopes making them hard to reach
And as I tried to climb the tree some branches broke off easily
So I had to be extremely careful
Still I managed to gather a little even though
this year wasn’t a bumper harvest for wild rice
What a strange year this has been Anyway I think I'll try making a
new type of rice cracker juice this year
where I'll also add a golden plum Mirabel I remember
last year there was a Mirabel plum that ripened late
There are still fruits available in September
It would be wonderful if I could blend these two fruits
to create a juice perfect for winter
I'm hoping this dream will come true
While saving money through self-sufficiency can
make a difference right
away it doesn't always do so
Because in recent years almost all of my money has
gone toward building the house and
the self-sufficient plot of land
That's why I'm not actually able to save much money right now
But for me learning self-sufficiency
skills is also a way to train my thinking
A way of thinking that has helped me and my entire family
become more economically independent and resilient over time
Given everything unfolding
around the world in recent
years I don't always feel completely confident tha
The government can learn how to
protect citizens from global crises
Sometimes these crises seem too complex and uncontrollable to
be resolved by individual countries
let alone on a global scale
So is this merely a question about
the will and courage of a system
I don't think so
I think that's also a
question about organizing on
a smaller scale even within individual households
I believe we all need to better at tackling
complex global issues
with simple local solutions
Because today the ideas
and knowledge we personally
learn and accumulate at home can entirely be shared
with the global community where
strangers united by shared
goals are confronting common
challenges just as we are
Therefore I believe we all must
learn to rely on ourselves more
In other words we must become more self-reliant
and independent Let's go
Because I had to spend a considerable
amount on the wood-burning stove
and chimney I decided
not to go on vacation in Norway like I did last year
This makes me a little sad since high school days I' ve always gone to
Norway Lapland or Sweden every year
except for one year spent at home
during the lockdown due to the pandemic
But in reality backpacking through beautiful natural
landscapes can also be
experienced right here in Denmark
And if we're being honest the
most important thing about
these trips is getting out
doing something different
but not necessarily the place you go to
Therefore I decided to take a series
of short getaways right here in Denmark
Not just at the end of summer but
throughout the upcoming fall and winter seasons
And who could deny that Denmark is
truly a breathtaking
country to explore
Not bad I just tried the juice
made from burnt rice fruit
and Mirabel's sour fruit and
they really do go well together
because Mirabel adds a natural sweetness to the juice
Then I added a bit of honey
that I received from a small village last week
With a little white sugar
Now I just need to rinse the jars with boiling water
before pouring in the juice
That way they won’t spoil
Next I'll make a batch of syrup from the sea
hawthorn berries I picked
this morning on the beach
He said picking them was
quite difficult due to the
thorny bushes but I managed to gather enough anyway
Now I'll cook a stew using these
I could also add a few apples
that I found near the sea
These kinds of juices are definitely quite concentrated but that's
exactly the point—I can dilute them
with boiling water when drinking
These are actually concentrated juices which can be
stored for quite a long time
Another way I save money is
That means buying groceries in large quantities at the supermarket
This means I'll have to make fewer trips
since I'll be making better use of what I buy
gs already bought and kept at home
Items like plant-based milk oats canned tomatoes and
rice are what help me sustain
meals over long periods
That's right and Earl Grey tea
too since I made up my mind
a month ago to completely stop buying coffee for myself
Fortunately I can supplement my store-bought
groceries with what I harvest from my own garden plot
My food choices always change with the seasons
I think there are nearly 30 different
edible fruits growing in my forest
garden available for harvesting from late May through early October
o keep my menu always rich and varied
I had also become quite skilled
at preparing dishes from whatever
ingredients happened to be available in the garden at the time
Right now I'm using lots of beans potatoes and squash
along with any other leftover vegetables that are ripe
Today I'm preparing a family
specialty — Spanish-style omelette
or at least some variation of it
I realize that each of us is
facing and will continue to face
countless crises—both around the world and right here at home
You don't have to change the
world but you can change yourself
and change the way you live your life by making
the most of what you already have
Have a wonderful day
