During World War II, gathering intelligence on the Nazis was critical to the Allies' victory,
and one of their most unlikely operatives, a glamorous American-born celebrity.
This is History Honors 250.
Josephine Baker was a world-famous dancer and singer known for her sultry performances.
But behind the scenes, Baker was secretly working for the French resistance.
As a celebrity, Baker was often invited to diplomatic social events,
events also attended by key Nazi officials.
Baker would eavesdrop, gaining critical information which she would then smuggle to the French,
hiding messages in her sheet music using invisible ink.
Her intelligence helped disrupt Nazi operations and sabotage their military efforts.
In 1961, Baker received two of France's highest military honors for her bravery
and remains one of the most extraordinary and unconventional heroes of World War II.
