On one of the coldest days of the year, with temperatures dropping to –30°F, I head deep into Yellowstone’s backcountry to spend a full day living alongside one of the park’s most iconic animals—the American bison.

Winter in Yellowstone is anything but quiet. As I move with the herd across a frozen landscape, I get a firsthand look at how these animals survive conditions that would shut most things down. From their massive frames and insulating fur to the behaviors that let them thrive when food is buried under feet of snow, the bison are built for this place.

But Yellowstone is never just about one species.

While tracking the herd, I run into signs of a predator moving through the same terrain—a pack of wolves. The day takes a turn when I come across a kill they had been feeding on, offering a raw look into the predator–prey dynamics that shape this ecosystem during winter.

This episode is about endurance, adaptation, and what daily life really looks like for wildlife when the temperature plummets and survival is the only priority.

Welcome to winter in Yellowstone.
