Nick Jonas talks about going on tour with the Jonas Brothers to celebrate their 20-year anniversary, getting inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame by Danny DeVito and the inspiration behind his new album Sunday Best.
Our first guest tonight is a Grammy-nominated musician,
actor, and one-third of Jonas Brothers' fifth.
And Sunday Best is available Friday.
Please welcome back to the show
our very good friend Nick Jonas, everyone!
Welcome back!
It's rare when they're that excited,
they want to applaud you while you're standing
and then again when you're sitting.
It is so good to be back. I always love seeing you here.
Congratulations.
You wrapped up a massive tour with your brothers.
20 years. 20 years of Jonas Brothers.
This was my favorite tour we've ever done.
Yeah.
It was 76 shows.
Unbelievable.
That was just the North American leg.
There's still more to come
in other parts of the world later this year.
But 76, then we did this thing
where we had special guests come out
and perform with us, people from our past,
part of our story, our journey,
and then just artists that we love.
And it was a great time.
You guys seem very good at looking back
and appreciating how wonderful this journey's been.
And do you do it even more
when you're on sort of an anniversary tour like that?
Yeah, I mean, the 20th anniversary
was last year, technically,
and we wanted to commemorate it with the fans
and tell the story of our journey and the family.
I think we realize how rare it is to still be doing this
and to have fans as supportive as our fans are
through the many stages of our career.
Do you remember your first red carpet?
We feel like this might be.
These guys acted like you were never
very much like,
this was like, we're never gonna be on another one of these.
Yeah, I don't understand why our mouths were open every shot.
It's very unkind.
Usually the paparazzi are like,
you wanna get a couple where your mouths are closed.
Yeah, they didn't care.
But we actually had a whole conversation
around what these poses were gonna be
and the brothers beforehand.
And we said, it'd be really cool
if we went like this in every photo.
Not so cool.
I like that you guys thought you were at the age
where you thought you were coining this as a move.
Yeah, yeah, we thought.
Nobody ever did that before you guys came up for it.
You also were inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
How do you get word that you are an inductee
into the New Jersey Hall of Fame?
Well, it came by way of Eli Manning coming on stage.
So we did this event called JonasCon
back in March last year,
which was a crazy idea that we had
that we didn't think we could actually pull off.
We did it out in Jersey at the American Dream Mall.
And thousands and thousands of people came out
to celebrate this crazy 20-year ride
and to kind of kick off the next chapter.
We're still very young.
So this is just the start to the next.
Stop showing off.
Yeah.
But we're on stage and Eli Manning comes out
and we're massive Giants fans.
And he came out and said,
hey, I've got great news for you
in front of the whole crowd.
You guys are gonna be inducted
into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.
Which as three Jerseyans
who take that as a real sense of pride,
it was a huge moment for us.
And Danny DeVito actually presented us
with our honoree and it was a cool night.
I mean, long night, long ceremony.
Yeah.
I will say-
A lot of inductees, it turns out.
DeVito, Eli Manning, and a mall,
it really is everything you would want.
It's Jersey.
From the New Jersey experience, yeah.
I would be worried, just knowing him as a prankster,
like if Eli Manning told me
I was getting inducted into something,
I would double check.
There you guys are.
Very nice to get inducted.
You also, I mean, you know, Jonas Kahn at a mall
makes a lot of sense because you guys did,
in the early days, you would do shows at malls.
Performed in malls, yeah.
Were you, when you think back to those days,
how nervous, how excited were you guys
before your early shows?
Well, we only performed in malls
because we couldn't get booked to play real shows.
Right, right, right.
They're like, let's find a place
where people are already there.
Yeah.
And then, and there was one instance in particular
where we were in St. Louis,
and I think Build-A-Bear Workshop
booked us to play in this mall sort of like auditorium
or just a square or whatever.
And we get there for sound check at 7 a.m.
And the person that was kind of our wrangler,
our handler that was like, hey, just so you know,
the mall walkers get here at 7.15.
I'm like, what is a mall walker?
Like, oh, it's a group of elderly folks
that come in here and get their exercise
and they walk over the mall before patrons come in.
And so, sure enough, while we're sound checking,
playing very loud pop rock music,
we were pissing these elderly folks off so much
while they're trying to enjoy their morning stroll,
unbothered.
Safe to say, about three people showed up for our show.
Yeah.
But it was a good time.
I would imagine when you're sound checking
in front of a Build-A-Bear and old people are mad at you,
that's when you're like, we made it.
We made it.
Yeah.
That's when Disney called, really.
Disney called, we're like,
we heard you guys don't play anywhere.
This, is this the first album?
This is the first album that's...
This is the first solo.
Technically unreleased.
Unreleased?
Yeah, so I made a whole album when I was first signed
at like 11 years old.
And then the last song I wrote for this solo album,
which never got released, was with Kevin and Joe.
Got it.
The first song we'd written together.
And then they heard of the label and were like,
wait, there's three of them?
And so they signed us and this thing got shelled
because of those guys.
Oh man.
So this is Nicholas Jonas.
But then the, so the first album that was released
was called Nick Jonas.
Is that correct?
First solo album.
Okay.
I believe was called Nick Jonas.
Gotcha.
In 2014.
So this was like, you were so young,
you were just bad at coming up with album titles.
Yeah.
Yeah, I was homeschooled.
You talk...
They're like, no, no, no, we know your name.
What's the title of the album?
You're like, yeah, no, it's Nick Jonas.
It's Nick Jonas.
How do you guys collaborate?
You talk about the last song in the album
is the three of you.
And obviously you've maintained a way of being
creatively in balance with one another,
but you know, how do you make decisions?
Is it two against one or do you wait till all three agree?
It is kind of a two against one situation.
And it actually, for the most part, it works.
Yeah.
You know, with you and your brother,
it's probably tough.
It's just...
Just one on one.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
By the way, I re-watched our day drinking episode.
Yeah, with our friend Jack McBrayer.
Friend Jack McBrayer.
Three Joe and I and McBrayer.
With my mother-in-law, which was a very funny experience.
Cause I didn't realize we drink a lot.
Yeah, we did.
It was fun though.
It's fun.
I try not to go back and watch them
because then I'm like, oh man, I got a problem.
I have a lot more questions.
Do you mind sticking around?
You guys, this is Nick Jonas, we'll be right back.
Welcome back everybody.
We're here with Nick Jonas
and Sunday Best.
Look at that.
That's a fantastic...
I mean this, look at that kid.
And Sunday Best, that's a very nice title.
Thank you very much.
What was the inspiration for these songs?
You know, it was kind of just snapshots of life
and trying to give people a window
into my world over the last two, three years.
And just some experiences that I've had.
The title stems from a lyric about, you know,
dressing your Sunday best, going to church
and as a kid, you know, our dad was a pastor,
grew up singing in church.
And so there's a lot of sort of gospel soul influences
in this music, which is something that I've,
I've always kind of had in my music,
but I leaned in a bit further
and got to work with some incredible collaborators
to make an album that I'm really proud of
and excited for people to hear and, you know,
come back to.
That's very exciting.
And then I heard Priyanka gets to hear your music first.
She does, yeah.
How is she as a sounding board?
Incredible because she's really honest.
Yeah.
And she's got really good ears.
She picked Sucker.
Okay.
Long before I thought it would be a hit.
Gotcha.
And basically, you know, I had this other song
that I actually wrote about her,
which I was like, this is the single, right?
She's like, no, it's this new one
that you just played me just now.
And she was right.
And she's been right about a lot of things.
Did you panic and go,
oh, it's also about you.
They're all about her.
Your daughter is four.
Does she listen to songs?
Does she have a take?
She, when she's not listening to, you know,
Disney princess songs.
Sure.
We are one of her favorite listens.
Okay, gotcha.
Her favorite song of ours with the brothers
is Love Me to Heaven.
Okay.
And on this album, there's actually songs,
the last song on the album that I wrote about her,
it's called Princesses.
And, you know, it's one of those titles
that I thought would never get used,
but I really liked the idea of, you know,
writing a song just about
what most of her mornings are like.
She walks in, she's like,
let's play Princesses.
And it's basically, she's the princess.
I'm the prince.
We go to the ball and we have a great time.
Some point in time, she loses a slipper.
You know how this works.
Yeah, yeah.
If I was capable of writing a song about my sons,
it would be called Ninjas Who Don't Listen
and Won't Put Their Shoes On.
Sounds like a hit.
They would like it.
They'd be like, all right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's fair.
You were back on Broadway last year.
I was.
Which is incredible.
This is also incredible.
You and Reba were on Broadway years ago.
And then again together on The Voice.
Yes.
You talked about, you know,
this incredible journey you've been on
and being able to lean on people
that were there early in your career
and you're still around in your life.
That must have been a very special thing.
I mean, certainly I know her as just a person
who visits this show,
as an incredibly sincere, wonderful lady.
She's the best.
Honestly, she was the first famous person I ever met.
I booked this job at nine years old
to go and be on Broadway.
It was a dream of mine for my entire life.
And, you know, she was so thoughtful
and really generous with all of the cast.
And she would have guests at every show
and it was more of the most famous people
you've ever seen.
Right, of course.
And it was just amazing
to see how gracious she was then
and, you know, how gracious she is now.
It's really incredible.
Doing The Voice with her,
and I was a coach a couple years ago
and came on to sort of mentor this time.
And she's, I guess,
she's just the same wonderful Reba.
Yeah.
Why she is where she is today.
It is, I think there is something to be said
for when you are younger
or at the beginning of your career
and you see somebody who is established
and they are still incredibly capable of being kind.
Yeah.
You're like, okay, there's no excuse.
Like there's really no excuse to change.
I want to finish by asking you about a digital short
I recently talked to with Andy Samberg
and the other Lonely Island about.
You guys were in a band called Property of the Queen.
I did not realize because I was talking
to these guys about it.
You guys actually had songs,
like fake songs that were not real.
They did not have to write music for you guys.
You had like 80 power,
1980s power ballads ready to go.
Yeah, I'm going to go back and listen to this episode
because I'm curious to know
if they thought we were insane or not.
No, they were big fans.
Like that was, they were, I mean, I think also
it was very rare for them to be working with people
at the musical level who would say,
actually we have songs and not be super cringe.
Well, that's great to hear.
It was one of my favorite things we ever got to do.
Yeah.
And I've actually rewatched it a few times recently.
Bill Hader is so funny as the wizard.
But it, you know, it was kind of a magical thing.
Basically, we were on tour in Europe.
We had all this downtime.
And so we would just write these silly songs
that were kind of in the vein of a 80s rock band.
And when we sat down for that initial meeting,
like they do with all the guests of SNL,
they're like, hey, you have any impressions
that you can do?
Yeah.
Couldn't do any impressions.
They're like, what about any sketch ideas?
And we said, well, we'd love to do Digital Short
and do this band.
And we played one of the songs.
And he was like, yeah, we'll do it.
Yeah.
Well, I'm glad you had it.
I'm glad they listened.
And I'm glad they did it.
And it's always so nice to see you, man.
Congrats on the new album.
Thanks for being here.
