The area surrounding Nerola had a unique historical history in the Middle Ages, marked first by the influence of the Abbey of Farfa, then by the rights of the Church.
From the 10th century to 1235, it was owned by the powerful Crescenzi family, then passed under the direct control of the Roman Church.
In 1300, Boniface VIII granted the castle as a fief to the Orsini family for their loyalty to the papacy, a family that held it until 1644. It then passed to the Barberini family, who separated it from their holdings in the second half of the 19th century, selling it to the Dukes of Lante della Rovere Montefeltro. With the unification of Italy, the territory of Nerola became part of the Italian State.
