This Downswing Mistake Was Throwing His Entire Swing Out

Talk me through any swing thoughts that you've got currently.
Yeah, I'm trying not to get too jammed on my right side.
So I'm really like trying to keep it, keep it moving.
It's almost like I start left, go right, come back left.
But the problem is I find that I come on top of it a lot more now,
which maybe creates some of that brightness.
Let's take a look at the golf swing and what's going on.
So your club path is consistently to the right.
So you're swinging on a path that's to the right.
But we sometimes just leave it out to the right
or then sometimes get it hooking.
Let's have a look at what we what we can see here.
Now, the ball's actually quite far back in the stance.
Whenever the ball is back in the stance, we're more likely to hit it.
Right. OK, no sway.
You've worked on that before in the past. Yeah.
OK, it looks pretty nice backswing there.
The shift to the right.
And then we know the release.
And there's that early release that you see there. Yeah.
And this is what you're going, OK, well, how do I hold on to that?
Those angles? Yeah. Yeah.
Now, I'm going to exaggerate this.
But if I put the ball back in the stance,
if I swing down aggressively with the body, hold on to the shaft,
what's going to happen to the golf ball?
Going to go right. Yeah.
What's going to happen to the height?
I guess you'll be delofting it, right?
So it'll be it'll come out.
It'll go low and right. All right. Yeah.
So intuitively, your body knows that because your ball is a little bit
back in the stance.
So what happens is you go, well, hang on a minute.
The ball's a little back.
I'm aggressively driving with the lower body.
But now I know that I don't want the ball to start out right.
So if I do this, I can square the face up.
Now, if I move the ball further forward in the stance up to here,
OK, that's too far forward.
But there's no way that you're going to want to do this now.
Because the balls are now going to go left.
So now you could start to move in a way that could do this
because now you can still create the height and you can start it more online.
So the first thing I want to do is I want to move the ball forward
in the stance to create the conditions for you to do this.
The more we move the ball position forward,
the more the less chance we're going to hit it to the right.
So I think there's a huge win for you just in ball position
that we can almost take the right side out of play by moving it forward.
I just want you to feel what the ball position is like forward,
maybe just ahead of center.
It's like maybe where I would have like a fairway would almost.
Yeah. Now for a six iron, I'm like, that's pretty close to where I'd want to see it.
That's not an exaggeration.
The more the ball is, the more the ball is back in the stance,
the more that face is going to want to point right. Yeah.
So there's no way you're going to hold on to shaft lean.
Look, because the face is more right. Right.
But if the ball is forward, you can hold on to some of that shaft angle
knowing you can square the face.
Interesting. Keep everything else.
Let's just I mean, I don't want you to do anything in the swing.
OK, all I want you to do is hit a shot with the ball forward in the stance.
All I want to see from this, if here's the dispersion, I want to do this.
Yeah, I want to have it.
But I basically want to take out the right shots out of play.
So, you know, it's not going right.
Yeah, it's a little fat. OK, that's good, though.
That's good. Now, why is it fast?
Because I'm used to hitting it.
Because you're used to hitting the ball for the back in the stance. Yeah.
Now, that's a good thing.
But now your body will start to to react to a new ball position.
Interesting. Nice. Yeah. Interesting.
Definitely went higher. Yeah.
Interesting. It's going higher.
Yeah, it should go high.
Should go high.
Because now we're less steep, we're less down, less de-lofted.
Little cleaner contact, which I like.
A little bit less interaction with the turf.
OK. Wow.
I don't think I've seen a six that go that high for me.
It's good. That's the way I want to see it.
Hit me one more shot and then I'm going to take you through
some of the golf swings that I want you to work on.
Wow. Yeah, it's a little rough, but.
It's probably five yards left.
It felt solid, though.
Best shot today, yeah?
Best shot today without even
without even changing anything yet.
Now look at the numbers on that.
We've got a path that's two degrees to 2.6 degrees to the right.
A face that's slightly left.
Let's take a look at what's happening now.
Good backswing. OK.
Lower body drives pretty hard here
and the upper body hangs back quite a lot.
So one thing that I see with you is a little bit of a mistiming,
but it's mistimed because I think what you've worked on
has been been more quick to go on the downswing.
Yeah. Yeah.
So you said that you've worked June on sort of going faster.
Yeah. So back and then and then going.
Now, what I see with you is that we get the top of the golf swing.
They're super aggressive with the legs.
We'll see the legs work really hard to the point where the upper body
gets left behind.
And then we have to do more of this as well.
Instead of us being able to get the top of the backswing.
OK. Yes, we're going to drive,
but everything's going to get to the line.
Even the left shoulder is going to get to the line.
And then we rotate on top of it.
But what are you thinking there?
I think we need we need to time things back up.
What we've just got is we've got a lower body that's super aggressive
and we get in everything left behind up here
instead of actually getting everything working down a little bit more together.
OK. The finish is a tell for me that we sort of swing through
and we sort of yeah, we're sort of stuck.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
We stuck here because the body's just slid out the way of the upper body
and we can't turn.
Is there a thought that you might have like for a cue for that?
Yeah, we'll do it. We'll do a bit of a drill for you.
I get the club across the shoulders like this.
This is what I see you do.
Good backswing.
I have a lower body.
This almost gets a little stuck here and then we blocked off.
This is what I want us to do.
So in the posture, turn back.
We're going to shift.
But I'm going to get that club down, back down towards the golf ball.
So I'm really getting everything working on top from the face
on into this lead leg instead of
your upper body sort of being stuck behind you.
Now, all I'm going to get you to do, I'm just going to do a downswing with you.
Ready? All I want you to do is turn on the way down.
Can I notice the difference in that feeling of the what do you notice?
I almost feel like I'm tipping over.
OK. And again for us, can I just turn?
Good. So notice all the weight.
Yeah. Into that left leg.
Yeah. You don't normally get the weight in that left leg. No.
So we're shifting the weight.
But what we're actually doing now, instead of just going with the lower body
and leaving the upper body hanging back,
we're actually getting the upper body to work down more.
Yeah. On top of it.
You're like, well, how do I feel this?
Your finish tells me a lot about what's happened before the golf ball.
If I get you to finish differently, it can change what happens before.
OK. I'm going to take you through a through swing.
And I want you to tell me what it feels like.
Lift. Watch. Lift the head up a little bit now.
OK. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going.
OK. Now, what do you notice differently here?
I'm way on my left. Way on your left.
Anything else? I mean, I'm really forward and left right now.
OK. Forward and left. Those are the two words.
Yeah. Forward and left.
When we slide right this way with the lower body, we're back and right.
The chest is right.
You said I feel forward and left.
Yeah. OK. Let's do that again.
Beautiful. I really like that drill because your body now isn't out racing anything.
You're just working it all through together.
Have a practice swing first.
And all I want you to just do, you can go smoother,
but I want you to feel you said those words forward and left.
That practice swing concerns me a little bit
because that's the last thing I want you practicing.
When I see that, I'm like, that's just we can't have you doing those practice swings.
What do we notice about this practice swing?
Well, look at the lower body. Yeah.
The lower body is pretty exaggerated, too. Exactly.
Now, you've been probably doing this for a while in terms of how much you move.
But look at the lower body here.
Look at the club face. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
It's not something we really want to practice that.
It's pretty open.
But what's happened with you is you've been very aggressive at
trying to probably hold on to these angles so much
that actually it's still in there and it's that's hurting you rather than helping you.
So for me there, the body's just done so much
that the club has no way of catching up.
We've got to retrain that out of you.
What I'm thinking about doing here for you is on a few of these swings
is dropping the right foot back.
Now you're going to want to push super hard.
I want to take the lower body out of it and almost get the upper body
working on top of the lower body with a quieter base.
Let's try that as a drill.
Yeah. So we're going to drop the right foot back. Good.
Now, what I want you to do here, I want this to stay on the ground.
I don't want you to.
I want that to stay on the ground. Do that again for me.
OK, so this is what we want.
This is going to feel strange. We're going to swing back.
OK. Yeah, that feels wrong, doesn't it?
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Everything that you've not been trying to do. Right.
Now, the more you do this, the worse your game is going to be.
Yeah. Right.
It's almost like covering it a little bit better. Right. Correct. Yeah.
Nice. Let's go. Narrow stance.
Let's go. Narrow even more.
Narrow even more. Good.
Notice the balance.
OK, the reason I did that is because the more I narrow the base
and you want to try and move your lower body, it's going to make you unstable.
OK, so let's go again.
Good. Let's try a couple of shots.
Yeah. OK, that's that's what I wanted to say.
That was really nice.
Really trying to use that upper body.
Yeah. Really compressed it on that one as well.
That was nice.
This is just taking out your lower body and getting you to
to move on to that was perfect.
There you go. Really good.
Different sound. Yeah.
There's a different sound in that, which is what I want to say.
And you can see where you strike in the ground here.
OK, one more.
OK, good. Let's go back to normal.
So give me a practice swing now.
And I just want you to feel forward and left.
I don't want you to be too aggressive, though.
I want you to almost completely turn on the way back.
I want you to smooth things down.
And again, for me, just completely turn on the way back.
Hold it. It's hard, isn't it?
Yeah. Because you've been so aggressive going this way.
Yeah, you're right. So just go a little narrower.
OK, there you go.
Love the finish there.
That one felt really nice.
You were sort of balanced here.
Your body was this way and you're on that left leg.
OK, I want you to hold that.
I want you to pose.
I want you to pose for me
because that's going to tell you.
Yeah, that's it.
And all it is, it's that like one, two seconds along the way.
You're just like, it's your feedback of your swing.
That is. Hold your finish.
Forward and left. Don't move.
Love it. Oh, it felt good.
Good. I like that. That was a good flight.
Yeah. OK. Forward and left.
Excellent. Wow, that one felt good.
Don't move. There you go.
Love the balance. Got it? Yeah.
Really nice ball flight.
Exactly what I wanted to see on that one.
And your balance was good.
OK, so here's the golf swing now.
Obviously, ball position now is is different.
It has to start here because you won't move otherwise
with the ball back in the stance.
We know it's going to cause some problems.
So we'll swing to the top of the backswing.
And we know that you're going to have no problem
with firing that lower body.
You'll see this lower body watch work instantly towards that line.
The knees are working hard here.
That right foot's working hard.
And then all that happens here because the lower body's gone really fast.
It's sort of the upper body hangs back behind then.
So we'll see your upper body there is short of the the impact line.
You'll move through. Definitely better.
Yeah. Just want that left shoulder to be a little bit a little bit more so.
Yeah, quite a lot of body down.
Getting the upper body a little bit more involved.
Guys, I hope you enjoyed that.
